but why is it flashing? Is it actually low on water, or is it just a faulty sensor?

sounds like the sensor is shagged. If you are after a quick fix, just pull the globe out from the cluster

Why don't you just replace the sensor and fix it properly! It a very handle tool. Doing water & oil checks is all well & good, but even they wont help you if you blow a hose whilst out on the highway.

its a 5 min fix to replace the sender unit.
would take longer than that to remove the bulb

would take longer than that to remove the bulb but removing a globe is free.

put a new float in, if your hose blows in between your weekly checks, you will cook your motor.
it nearly happened to my xr6 right after i did the head gasket, but luckily the light came on.

Leaving the light in and working is a reminder that something needs fixing. Removing the bulb will mean it gets forgotten until its to late.

Im of the opinion it is one of the less useful things on the instrument cluster. You guys talk about it like you are putting your engine in danger by disabling it - keep in mind that its only the mid and high clusters that got this feature and its not like there are gli's blowing left right and centre. For the rest of them, a temperature gauge and warning light seems to be enough. If someone is going to ignore them to the point where the engine gets damaged is a low coolant light really going to help?
Fix it if its cheap and easy, otherwise no big deal.
