Theres a drain bolt in bottom right side of the radiator, once the radiator is empty just put the hose on hard in the header tank should help clean out the radiator or else have it cleaned by a radiator shop, for the discoloured header tank you can get a new one from ford.

If your going to flush the radiator then buy a good flush solution and do the whole engine. As for the coolant a local mechanic advised me to use valaoline.

I have used it for the last 8 years without problems. Yes Ford do run a green coolant in the BA not sure of the code on it. Take the bottom hose off the radiator to drain it. Those drain plugs become brittle and break when trying to remove them.

When I do mine I run a flush/cleaning product in it first. Then I undo the radiator drain plug and the bottom hose were it connects to teh radiator (don't disconnect it at the water pump as you will get water pouring onto your alternator which isn't a good idea to prolong the alternators life).
I then open up the thermostate housing and stick a hose in there to run clean water all through the head and block and likewise through the top of the radiator. When the water coming out is clear and no longer rusty, or the colour of the coolant then I put it all back together and fill it up, run the car till hot and then top as need be. |

pore flush solution in, go for a drive, turn heater on to high, make sure its not on a hot day.LOL
"cool engine right down", remove the drain bolt, drain the system out. bolt the drain plug back up, fill with water plus add some more coolant flush. run engine til warm with heater on full, wait til it cools down & repeat drain procedure above. fill with fresh water & warm up again, cool down, drain, remove thermostat & check it by placing it in boiling water for proper operation. replace if not working. fill the system with proper coolant & run engine til hot with the header cap off, keep an eye on the coolant level you'll see it raise & fall as it tries & purge the air inside the block, top up again, replace header cap but half close{recovery position} go for a short drive incase theres still air in the system, cool down & top up if level is low. tighten the header cap don't forget to add some anti-corrosion. & thats how all my cars have lasted through the years without any blown head gasket/overheating problems, apart from use by date things like just one water pump in the last 19 years.

I do, pays to rinse out any crud that might have accumulated over time.

if it were me, id just dump the coolant, and use a hose to flush the system out. Once! you need to loosen the bottom hose of the radiator. to get rid of all the s**t. flush it more then once, a good 30 to 45 minute of flushing should do it.
