Hi, first some info what i have

Ford el Falcon 98
auto
6cyl

the problem i am having is that the temp gauge is playing up what has been happening is in the morning when the car is cold when i start it up the temp gauge shoots up to high and will stay there for about 5 min then go back to normal. but after a long drive it will start to go up and down very quickly sometimes even won't register. it has had the temp sensor replaced. i thinkit miught be the temp sensor plug not connecting because i can wiggle it and it will respond, what wil happen is the temp guage shoots up to high and the radiator fan will turn on full blast. if i wiggle it again it will go back to normal and fan turn off.

is it possible the connector or could it be the fan causing it to do this?

also it will acasionally when the temp gauge does not respond cause the car to stall and it can take while to get started, when this happens you can start the car but it idles crap and you can not engage a gear it will continue to stall, so you have to sit there reving the s**t out of it until it will go this is a real pain in the a*** when you are in traffic.

Any ideas?

check the connection to the temp sensor near the thermostat make sure it is a good contact. normaly when u disconect that sensor when the car is running the temp guage should drop to zero and after a few seconds rise up to full and kick in the thermo fans to top speed.

Yeah i have been fiddling around with it today found the contact very dirty cleaned them up and it seams have a better connection i will have to see how it goes.

if any one else has the same model what is the normal area that the temp needle should sit at,mine is sitting on the first line of the normal area is this normal or shouldt be within the normal temp area ? eg half way

the car is diffently not over heating.

On the EL's and EF's, the range for optimum running temperature is between or on the, "A" and the "M" on your Temp guage. "R" is definately no good and needs seeing to by a mechanic.

yep my ef seems to sit on the "A" even even with ambient temp at 42 degrees on the highway. donno bout city drivin. mine is also a manual.
when i first got the car 2years ago the temp would sit bout half way or more i cleaned the radiator and whole cooling system and changed the thermostat and ran quality coolant through it and i've never had a problem since. I clean the cooling system bout every 6 months in mine.

mine does not have "A","M" and "R" it has C for cold and H for Hot and in between there is a area For normal Temp, mine is siting just on the first marker for normal,

Since cleaning the temp sensor connection it seams to have fixed the temp gauge from doing what it has been doing.

but will have to see how it goes, hopefully the problem of it stalling is due to the sensor failing.

All this talk of N and R and L or whatever is a bit silly really, lol.

Enable the diagnostic mode on the odometer (see tech documents) and look at the actual readout in degrees.

FYI - on a HOT day going up a big hill my temp hovers around 100 degrees.

I now understands oops,
