Hi all,
In 2-3 weeks I'm going to buy a ford el for my engine conversion. The next questions might seem quite trivial and stupid but hey gotta ask to learn! Some of the cars I've been looking at are to me quite high khs 200-250 000. The biggest concern I have is buying a car and it turning out to be a s**t donk. When I do buy the car I'm going to replace the rear main seal welch plugs and head gasket the only thing I'm not sure of will be the piston rings, should I take a compression tester and test all of the cylinders? Or are ford blocks pretty good on that side of things. Cheers for your time.

Mate you can have cars with 50,000 kays on them that have worse engines than some with high kays. It depends all on how the car has been looked after. Comparing my EB that has 430,000 kays on it that runs awesome 200 to 250 kays on an EL is not really high kays for a Ford motor.

Is the head gasket blown ? If its not id leave it. Could have been replaced not long ago from the previous owner.

The Ford 6s are fairly strong and will last ages if maintained. However if you have the gear handy, doing a compression check and a 'leak down' test will give a you much clearer idea of how healthy the motor is. Also, do the usual checks of how clean the oil, coolant and trans fluids are and ask when they were last changed etc. The spark plug colour and condition are also very good indicators of the engines condition, electrodes should all evenly be a light brown to greyish colour with very little or no 'burnt oil' appearance to them in a healthy cylinder.

Thanks Esteven8
Will have a look at what you mentioned when I look at the cars I have lined up. Happy to hear ford 6's have strong motors!

I would do the rear main and welsh plugs. Then install the motor. See how it runs, compression test as suggested, the head is easy enough to rip off in car (I can get the head off in 40 minutes)

How much is it to get a head machined anyway?

Yea 40 mins off. Not a record by any means but that's how I do it. Of course it's longer to re assemble.
Usually $44 for 4 cyl $66 for 6 and $88 for 8. |
