Today I replaced the coil on my falcon ED.
Look at the photos of the Bosch coil. It seems faultless until you remove the 2 brackets which expose 2 long hairline cracks. THIS MUST BE A DESIGN FAULT! The coil is bolted on the engine block under the inlet manifold in a position which would expose it to high temperatures (not just the engine heat but road heat as well on a hot day). The expansion and contraction properties of the metal brackets and the plastic casing are different and probably account for the cracks! One good rainy day, a puddle or an engine wash will suffice in damaging the secondary high voltage coil. I thought of putting the new coil near the windscreen washer reservoir. This way I would not have to lengthen the cable that connects to the distributor cap. Have any of you have any suggestions ?

I have extended the coil loom plug and mounted the coil on the passenger side Strut Tower just near the airbox. This was he only spot I could find, so I could keep using the standard length coil-dizzy lead. BTW The e-series race cars all move the coils to the strut tower.
cheers...

its not that they are faulty, its that the crack from heat and engine vibration..

I was replacing ignition coils under warranty back in the 90's at a Ford dealership I worked at.
This is a pic of an EL coil. I have since fitted an ICE 7amp ignition system......the gain from that was a really flat torque curve.

I guess you replaced the coil, cables, distributor and TFI module?...what $ ball park... Could one just et the ICE 4000 coil and leave Mother Ford's other ignition components? Given your experience, what other faulty "critical" components were there in the ED model? I am referring to items that could leave you stranded (on a cold wet winter's night... ) I asked a wreck yard owner and he said the TFI module has a bad reputation.... |
