Kit wrote: Crank seals, timing cover, sump gasket etc. They've quoted 7.5hours of labor. I also get big drops of very green coolant under the harmonic balancer from time to time. The oil seals are leaking quite a bit in the that area, hence the quote to fix. But where would the coolant be coming from. It's not dirty coolant at all, but fresh. No where near the overflow either so definately not that? Head gasket was fixed 2-months ago. Any ideas? at $110 per hour that's $825 in labour alone which leaves $337 the thing to remember with dealers is that the religiously stick to times allocated in the service manual. ask them to use aftermarket parts to bring the price down a little just tell them if they cant help by bringing the price down a little then you will be forced to take it elsewhere ask and ye shall receive

Check the radiator for a split that is spraying the front of the motor.

I'm not saying that price is good. We quote to keep our bills paid and our doors open. I don't have time to waste on jobs that can't profit. I won't even provide a quote, I'll given an estimate, and that estimate is subject to change upon disassembly, as it just not posible for anyone to foresee what might be inside a 10+ year old engine or gearbox ect. |

I understand what your saying, i really do. And In no way did i say demand a better price (it just reads that way). You just have to be pollite about things as a customer when discussing "prices" I get hassled to drop my prices by every single one of my customers every single day and most times i do. The way i see it i would rather discount my price and make a X amount of profit as opposed to not moving on my prices and make no profit at all.

Is the sump gasket actually leaking.... sump gasket, ideally is a motor out job, but its not very common for them to leak, badly anyway. Front seal maybe, and could possibly require a new balancer. Oil leaks can also come from timing cover bolts, chain tensioner etc. Coolant could be w/pump, top hose, thermostat housing, a number of things. Need to pressure test it. Where in perth are you? |

I'm in Swan View.
The tensioner screw o-ring was done about 6-weeks ago. That too was leaking oil. I think all this was caused by a serious error when I had the head gasket replaced 3-months ago. We accidently put around 8 1/2 litres of oil back in, and I drove around like that for almost a week. I think it blew out or weakened some seals around the front of the engine. I just want to fix it so it doesn't drip on my mum nice paved driveway, or my new driveway when my house is finished. |

Apparently Ford somehow can pull the motor up a bit and drop the k-frame. I'm not sure how this procedure is done, how can this be done when the engine is still connected to the gear box. And can that put stress on the rear main oil seal? I'm considering and engine change now. Will check into it ASAP. |

Yer I have done sump seal in the car, not in a e series mind you, but basically you can un do the engine mount's and jack up the engine till the bell housing hits the firewall. Its not a problem cause the box is mounted on a rubber mount and the main stress would be on the bolts from the bell housing to the motor.

No it can't put stress on the rear seal. the gear box is still bolted to the engine, all they are doing is lifting it from the front and pivoting the whole thing on the gear box mount. nannas_ed wrote: I understand what your saying, i really do. For every 1 customer i loose by not shifting on price there are 10 others waiting in line. |

Having returning customers far outways the profit made by overcharging 1 customer and never seing them again. |

Having returning customers far outways the profit made by overcharging 1 customer and never seing them again. Thats the difference. I don't over charge, i charge what the job is worth. The price i give is the lowest price i can give. There is no room to move. The guys that can afford to drop the price a little are the ones over quoting/over charging. In the long run, you are better off doing quality work and charging the correct the price in the first place. If that means the job ended up costing slightly more or less then the original estimate then thats what you charge. Id rather be known as the mechanic that does good quality work. |

leaking coolant could be the top thermostat housing spout. on my au the spout where the top radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing corroded. couldnt see it as it was covered by the hose. only a small hole but took me a week to find. replaced the top housing with a unit from supercrap and voila.
