4 or 5 thou is even a bit loose for my likings too. i like to get 2thou. no more then 3. most of the time the builder does not have worry about it anyway. only double check on pre assembly. some dont but i tripple check on final assembly too.
i'm lucky my machinest has years in the game and i'm yet to have to send something back for refinnishing...

fraser... go for it man. get your wreck and rebuild it.
there are a few people on here with good info if you get stuck. or you could always spend 2 hours of night talking s**t with me on msn about it.

i meant in measuring the clearances is tight and really small

what you get done, how much you do yourself, and what goodies you add all boil down to one thing:

how much are you willing to spend?

ok.... heres a link which should help you out a bit. most probably cut your rebuild to 1/2 of the cost if you DIY.

I've done a engine prep about 8 or 9 months ago with the help of this site.

The only thing I didn't do is: balance pistons, codrods, crankshaft, flywheel. decked the block. lighten the flywheel. recondition the rods, including shot peening. all the test & blueprinting.

what you'll need is a "block prep kit, porting kit {deluxe}, wheels- deburring & finishing for hand grinder.
click on the DIY guide or check out there new PRO "pit Kit"
