Well, another EA has bitten the dust after a minor accident the other night, so parting it and transferring the aftermarket parts to a new car. Looking at a 98 EL Fairmont (Auto + 160,xxxkms) at the moment and was just after some info:

1. Will the radiator out of my EA fit into an EL? (Was bloody brilliant)

2. I know the extractors will fit, but are there any difference in E-series catbacks?

3. I know smartlock and the occasional head gasket are an issue, but any other common ones I should know about?

4. Should I trust the receipts the salesman is showing me? They say that $2000 of work was done right before trade-in. Suspicious?

Thanks guys

1. EL radiator will probably be just as good as the ea one.
2. Extactors and Exhaust will fit.
3. Never had a problem with smartlock on my EL.
4. Are they dated ? Business name ? could always call them and ask to verify id they did the work in question.

also going by your sig .. the cam will fit as well, and possibly all the suspension

Oh, the radiator in the EA was aftermarket (otherwise I wouldn't want it at all). New one is like $400 of the same kind, so, I'm hoping to just swap it out.

I'll do a bit more research on the business and ask 'em to run it over the pits. He showed me the receipts out of the service history book and read it all out. I saw the total that was paid, but I didn't have a good read.

Oh, its going for $4800 and has a years rego on it too. Good price? I redbooked it and it's about usual cost.

Sounds good. One thing about the cam, make sure the EL isn't a hybrid (with the AU head) otherwise the cam will not fit.

Is that a hard problem to get around? Bigger or smaller?

It wont fit.

Lame. How bad are EL's on headgaskets and overheating?

Can anyone suggest some model-specific questions to ask about it?

Cheers

Well, turns out the EL has some panel damage i missed when i checked it out. It's got white residue they couldn't get out of the bonnet lining, so I'd say it's lost a gasket before and there's some tar-like oil at the bottom of the engine.

How's it sound to you guys? Worthwhile looking for something else instead? It's gotta be an e-series (or AU) so i can transfer parts. I've got a max budget of about $8,000
