Can anyone tell me why the EL has better fuel economy (12L per 100km), than the EF 15L per 100km). Did they change the intake manifold or the exhaust manifold? Or is it due to the ignition changes, a cam change or the extra counterweights on the crankshaft? Any answers?

I have an EF and drive long K's I average around 8-9L / per 100 K's on the Hwy, and in the city I get 11L /per 100, however If i boot it in the city I average 12.9.
EF Ser.2 tickford Head, Headers, 2.5" pipe, deburred intake plenum, 3.23lsd and a lovely Manual box. ohh, I do drink more fuel if I use the XR6 ECU, around 1litre both hwy and city. I have no idea how they came up with the EL drinks less.. sales pitch maybe for the cabbies? every EF and EL i've been in seem to average the same fuel usage.. ahh well! thats my useless 2 cents. Andrew

I don't think there were any changes in spec between the EF & EL engines apart form the intake plumbing.
As far as fuel economy goes I get about the same figures out of my manual EF XR6 as Krytox gets out of his car, mine is stock apart from 2.5 inch cat back exhaust. Cheers, Alan.

The head design was also changed a bit.
EF's have a 94AA or 94AB model head. EL's have a 95AA (pre Feb 98) or 96DA (post feb 98). The 96DA heads from the Hybrid motors tended to have better fuel consumption than previous heads... And im guesing that the 95AA heads might be better than the 94's as well. |

Was there a stamping or something on the head to tell the different models apart?
And what was the hybrid motor .... was that basically an AU head on EL block?

Yep. Stamping on the front of the head.
Could be anyone as follows: Standard I6 94AA 94AB 95AA 96DA Tickford Head 94DT 95DT 96DT The hybrid head (96Dx) uses AU valves, valvetrain and head design. Where the ports are the smallest of the lot. Must help with keeping up the air speed. |

The new Ford head I've just fitted to my 94 EF is marked 95DA, the label on the box read EF 6049A, the original head is marked 94DA. The new head had a few minor changes to the areas around valve guide where it comes through the port roof, the lump or material surrounding the valve guide on both intake and exhaust has been removed so the flow is much smoother. Before replacing the head my fuel economy was terrible about 17,18 L per 100km, after the new head was fitted its back to 11/12 L. When removing the exhaust manifold a lot of the bolts were finger tight and you cold see where it had been leaking and moving a bit. The exhaust guy I use said this was more than likely the cause of the high fuel consumption, air was being sucked into the manifold and the oxygen sensor was getting a lean reading so the ECU was compensating by richening up the mix.

Yeah.... But now watch it dive and hit the empty mark before you know it... Ive done the same. 820km is my best tank... First half of gauge takes forever to go... But once thats hit, watch it fall.. |

Yeah .... they seem to do that .... mine does the same Ditto on that... mine takes ages to go through the top of the tank and then it plummets to empty ... lol. I get around 8-9L/100 on the country roads and about 11-12L/100 city driving.... I reckon im gonna find myself a mighty boy ute with the fuel prices going up.

Dont get anywhere near that bad in my EL Ghia. I usually get 13/14's around city. 15 to 17 if I flog the poor thing. Drops down to 8 to 9 l/100km on freeway driving. Yesterday I drove to Heathcote Dragway, about 140km one way trip... Did 9 runs on the strip, and drove back. Speeds varied between 60km/h and 165km/h (mainly in the 90 to 110km/h zone), and I got a 10.9l/100km average by the trip computer. What's the build date of your car, just out of curiosity? |

arm79 - build date is "march 97" - car has done 145k's ,always serviced, runs fine, only mods are tickford snorkel & extractors and never got any better than 15l/100ks city driving and 10l/100ks country
what could cause bad ecomomy?? |
