Hey guys
Thinking about purchasing a 2006 BF xr6 with 87000 k's on the clock and no mods. The only thing that is concerning is fuel economy in these suckers. My dad currently has a 2005 BA Futura and he spends $80 a week on fuel (he drives about 120k's a day though) so his scare tactic's of "think how much money you will be wasting by buying a six cylinder car!" is kinda working... but I really don't want a four cylinder car. I'm thinking that it's probably going to cost about $50 a week to get me to and from work (60k's a day) and some fun stuff on the weekends. Even open to getting it tuned and maybe some extractors to help with economy and maybe performance??? Let me know what you think. Anita |

$50 of fuel a week will get you (at say $1.60/L Premium Unleaded a.k.a PULP) about 31L. Say the BF gets about 11L/100km (both city/hwy driving), that will give you about 280km. From those calculations and assumptions, you'd need at least $70 to get through the week.
If you are worried about fuel economy, I would say get a smaller car...or even a motorcycle. I have an 1996 EL which drinks about 13L/100km and for 2 months I drove to and from work during stop-start-freeway-parking-lot traffic averaging 600km a week. Cost me on average $120 in PULP fuel a week, depending on what I do on weekends. In saying all that, you can modify the car with performance items and get a proper tune, drive it sedately and save you a bit more fuel (maybe 2-3L/100km saving...that's being generous)...but it would still cost you a fair bit to run. As long as you are not too heavy footed, you might be able to get away with $60 in fuel (assuming you run PULP rather than ULP) Fuel economic 6s, I'd say BMW...but you get what you pay for.

i do about 450kms per week, averaging 12.8L/100 in s**t traffic city driving (ba mk2), it cost me at the moment about 90 bucks to fill up each week on 98RON. do i regret buying my xr6 HELL NO, all the good (not fwd) 4 cylinder cars on the market are getting old and wouldn't have a flashy 6-8L/100 found in modern cars anyway.
just noticed you said BF, is the car a 4speed auto, 6 speed auto or manual??

It's a six speed auto, I really want the car but fuel prices are only going to keep going up and combine that with insurance makes me wonder if the extra two cylinders are really worth it, insurance is about $1700 a year so it's a pretty big expense...

Well that depends. Do you NEED to get a six, or do you WANT a six. If you just drive from A to B without the requirement of power/torque just get a 4 cylinder small car that will do the trick. I mean not everyone NEEDs a six, but some buy it for the torque/power so they can tow things (others will just get a good diesel engine) or the fact they are spacious to fit family and luggage in. Towing with a 4 cylinder will be hopeless and capacity in a small car would be lacking as a family car. If you're willing to pay for the extra fuel cost, by all means get a six. If you can afford to, get a new Falcon with LPG, has the same power/grunt as unleaded. By the way, if you get a 4 cylinder turbo, it'll be just as bad.

Have you tried looking at Turbo Diesel?? They are pretty decent for the price, and fuel economy is great.

thf xr6 with spd box will have much better fuel economy than your dads ba future coz it will have the old clunker btr 4spd.
also gas is good. and has been said.. how you drive is the biggest factor.

I don't really drive crazy... I give It a go when I feel like it but not all the time. I do really want the performance, I don't think there is any point having and paying for a car which I hate driving and can't have fun in
 The LPG conversion sounds like a great idea, I'm going to call around when I make up my mind and scope some companies out. |

ive been wondering this too i had a vs commodore and am now looking at a BA xt and is there that much between the two one being 3.8 and the other 4.0? i was fine with the commo but from what i hear the falcons are even more thirsty????

Lol vs commodores are like 10 years older.
Therefore the ba has way better fuel economy and loads more power / torque. No jokes. just make sure u pick up 1 well looked after...  P.s I can't believe u would even compare a crap vs to a ba. Welcome to ford world. The real world.

LPG u lose around 20 kw fly wheel n a touch of torque.
Cheap on gas but Ive driven a lPg hire car not lOng ago and I must say it chews much more than 98 petrol. I'd stick with petrol man.

I'm not comparing the cars, I'm comparing the engines being theyre both 6cyl. Now I'd get 450k's from a tank of $50 (subject to fuel prices). Getting 220k's sounds terrible, although my friend with a 2004 futura says he gets 600k's from $70 (and said he goes hard)????
