hey i have an el xr6 with 230xxx km
it has small mods - gt snorkle - JMM extractors - 100 cpi cat - 2.5 inch all the way through - and a very clean K&N filter i was getting 420km a tank and after doing some research i changed the O2 sensor, which improved the fuel to 470km a tank, which was awsome see i got a little over 50km. How can i improve this a bit more? i want to get over 500km, i know it is possible because new the car would get 540km. i know there is wear and tear on the car and it has done 230xxx km. what is the next step? - should i change the coolent sensor, i read that it work with the O2 sensor and will help? any advice will be appreciated, and would like to here from someone that has done it before and got results. |

Replacing all your ECU related sensors may help.
AIT sensor. Air Intake Temperature, it should be under the throttle body. Some new high quality spark plugs and new leads. Some injector cleaner or some new injectors may help too. And the ultimate fuel saver.. If its manual, don't rev past 2500rpm when driving. And hold back on the reins. If you want to go so far as to get a J3 chip with an economy tune, that will help a lot. 4.0s are a big engine and the falcons are pretty weighty. I get 700 to a tank going to Adelaide highway cruising averaging 110. I'd get 500 max from a tank town driving. Including some thrashing.

The O2 is the only sensor that wears out. Only change the others if they are throwing codes.
Run high tyre pressure, thin oil, and look at your driving style. Make sure your base timing is on or above factory and that none of your brakes are dragging. These are all cheap/free things that will help. As said above, a J3 with an economy tune could also help squeeze a bit more from it. Cheers, Jason

My replacement 02 sensor sure helped fuel economy. Only buy a good brand like vdo or bosch.

* great to see good results like getting 500km from town driving.
* i used the NTK O2 sensor which is ment to be the best and is about $40 more than the others. *i also have new top gun leads and new auto elite spark plugs and using 98 fuel the car only gets the best of the best, but still only getting 470km plus (but i did put the foot down a bit LOL) is it worth getting the AU injectors (better spray patern) is this ganna give me better fuel thats noticable??? i cant see how this is going to regulate the fuel amounts? does anyone have an idea of how this may effect the fuel and ECU to pass through less fuel??? because if so i will change them! also does anyone know if the coolant temperature sensor wears out and if this will effect the fuel? if so HOW?? thanks in advance |

But the coolant temp sensor can stuff up but it will throw codes, have you checked for codes? If it does stuff up, it will affect fuel usage because the ecu thinks the engine is still cold therefore puts more fuel in to run, just sharing my knowledge altho isnt much ahah hope it helps

well that sounds like a logical answer, if the sensor says the car is cold it will pump more fuel in.
does anyone know what brand are good i got a quote for the TRITON brand from supercheap $41.40 is their a better brand? |

Tridon are pretty popular, most auto parts stores stock them.
I've never had any issues with them. All the mechanic workshops I've worked at have used them. Have a hunt, maybe Bosch do one. But ultimately a genuine ford one should be the best possible replacement being a full specific item, but a LOT of parts now days are all from the same factory in china just put in a different box...

yeh it looks like i will get a genuine ford coolant sensor.
i had a look at my car and is showing the car i running very cold, as the temp shows just on the start of normal gage after a 20 min drive. I'm getting 470km a tank now and after i change the sensor i hope to get close to 500km. if anyone else has any ideas, please share ? cheers |

"Normal" operating temp isn't smack in the middle of the word but the whole word is the range. With a few degrees between N and L. As long as it is sitting in that range the temp is close enough. Keep in mind it fluctuates while driving, raises a little at lights lowers at cruise, and the ECU adjusts for the few degrees. Putting in a new sensor will guarantee the ecu gets a accurate reading. But that's not to say your current one isnt already.. 470 is pretty close to 500, so I wouldn't be too upset if it dosnt improve. 30k is less than $10 of fuel... Have you worked out an average L/km? What's the trip computer tell?
