open the fuel pump inspection cover in the boot, make sure there is no fuel leaking from either around the pump itself or from the feed or return line. this is pretty much the only place fuel smell will enter the cabin, otherwise, check the charcol cannister is still intact and the vent lines have not come away from it. located in the front left guard near the ABS unit.

Yep, I had a leak around the cradle which had the same symptoms.

I had a fuel smell from a faulty fuel cap. The valve in the cap that allows the fuel tank to vent, sometimes comes apart (normally after dropping it ), allowing fumes out. It will probably make a rattling noise when shaken if this is the case.

I had a really strong nauseating gas smell for weeks once before i realised there was a gigantic hole in the line just before the converter. It was spraying straight onto the extractors i'm really lucky lol

mine is doing the same and it is the seal around the fuel pump in the boot.

hanks for the advice guys. the fuel cap is all in good order and the smell comes through the airvents so i guess it would be coming from near the carbon canister?

I can say with 95% accuracy that it is the canister purge solenoid, about $400 from ford or $5-10 from the wreckers.

Through the air vents? Check the fuel lines at the back of the inlet manifold. Check the Fuel Pressure regulator for any signs of leakage. Check all the injectors while your at it.

I / we had this drama in the missus old EL, check your vaccum lines in the engine bay. I can't remeber what we did to fix this but I am 99% it was a fauly vaccum line or tree

As i have the same problem fuel smell inside the cabin! i have checked for fuel leaks from front to back and found none! checked all vacuum lines, all ok there. does this canister purge solenoid have any alternate names? the fuel smell is not there constantly,it appears to be coming in the vents in the dashboard. but when it is there it is real bad, you have to open the window! any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers |

Have a look down near the throttle body close to the air box, it will have two redish looking hoses connected to it.
