Hello,

I'm just wondering if the XE came out on Leaded or Unleaded fuel?

If both how can I tell what mine is supposed to use?

If I use Unleaded in a Leaded engine what will happen to it?

Thanks.

Hey mate
All XE's came out as Leaded engines. It wasn't until 1986 when Falcons came out as unleaded (XF).

I think it might be possible to run an XE EFI on PULP though.

If you use ULP in a leaded engine, you might have a bit of loss in power and gradually over time you'll wear the valve seats out, because in leaded engines they are made of a softer material. This is because they used the lead in the petrol to protect them.
Valve-masters is what can replace the leads job.
It is possible also to get an additive in the tank like we did with our carb XE so you can safely fill it up with PULP for 5000km.

Hope this helps

These day's you can only legally buy unleaded petrol for road use.

Is your XE a 6cyl? If so, does it have an alloy head or cast iron head? If it has an alloy head, it should have hardened valve seats & valves, which will be fine on unleaded fuel. The issue will be relating to the engines compression ratio. Super (leaded) petrol was a higher RON octane rating fuel than standard unleaded, so you might need to run a higher RON octane unleaded like E10, or the premiums.

You might also be able to modify your engine timing to take a couple of degree's out of it to run better on standard 91 RON unleaded. I had to pull a couple of degree's of timing out of my LH torana when it was run on petrol due to the high compression ratio & ignition advance, once I couldn't buy leaded or LRP for it. On LPG it was fine, didn't have to change the timing at all.

Cheers

i you have the alloy head run some penrite valve sheild or some lead subsitute through it every tank dads fairmont ghia would only run on super when it was available, now it will only run properly on premium with added vavle sheild, normal unleaded just makes it ping and s*** all the time.
