thanks I would think a transmission service should fix this. Around $100.

I think its going to need more than just a service. This jerk from 1st to 2nd is classic S5 solenoid problem. Cost is around $300-$350 including service.

Yup he pretty much hit the nail on the head! if you cant afford to fix it you can just pretend you have a shift kit in it! lol |

It might just need a full flush, new gasket & filter.
I had similar problems with my auto. took it to one mechanic, his prognosis was: its due for a major overhaul $2000-4000 rebuilt. the next shop said it might be the "S5" solenoid $290-$$350 excluding oil, flush, gasket & filter. the next shop was right on the mark their prognosis was: dirty trans oil "blocking filter" almost a litre low on trans fluid. got a full flush, new gasket, filter & fresh oil. now don't really need to switch on the shift kit anymore. its like new

Ive had a similiar experience, 1 place said it just needed a service, another said they couldnt find anything wrong with it and it may just need a service , they said the oil was really black and my mates neighbour who use to be a ford mechanic said straight away its the solenoid, something about flooding.i suppose i could just get a service and if that doesnt work then replace the solenoid

I can't believe it cost you so much. I've had 2 done both my old EA and the EL and both were a little over $300 including service, S5 & rear bush.

we had, auto service,s5,LH selector shaft seal, new speedo sender, rear extension bush and seal
$520 plus gst = $572.00 that was done on the 20/06/2003 and never had a problem since,,except the bloody sump gasket leak,,it's gunna cost me about $800 to get fixed as i don't have the room or equipment to remove the engine,so i have to get someone to do it for me .

Does it do it under light acceleration, or under heavy accelration off the line.
If it does it under light, but not under heavy, could be as simple as a TPS problem and not an expensive gearbox fix, the TPS has ALOT to do with gearbox behaviour.
