Well ... found out yesterday that the main cause on my oil leak in the ute was due to the oil pressure switch ... I guess at least it wasn't the sump gasket at least.
I took it to the friendly chaps at Cresent Motorsport to diagnose it a bit better ... yep ... Oil pressure switch was a cause ... oil was sprayed everywhere underbonnet. Now I can tell you one thing ... Ford was great designers for this I6 motor (AU EGAS) ... why the hell they put a part like this right under the intake manifold ... and immediately above the coil/engine mount on the passenger side. Much swearing was involved in the replacement of this. Next time you are Cresent ... ask Reynold how much of a pain these things are. 4 hours later it was replaced ... oh the replacement patr from ford needed a 24mm deep socket ... the Ford factory item was measured at 25mm (use a 1-inch deep socket) ... the reason for the deep socket was because of the terminal on the end of the switch. Thanks to Joe there for letting me use his tools to replace the part .. and also for Reynolds help ... also to Green Machine (DRASTK ... I think his plate is .. hee hee) for his help too ... and amusement trying to get this damn part out. Just thought I'd share my pain from yesterday. Oh ... to let you know how much oil came out due to this switch ... and hour drive I lost nearly 5 L of oil ... that was just getting from home to Liverpool to get it checked.

Sounds like a real pain. But atleast its done now and you didnt do damage to the motor after lossing 5L of oil.

Exactly ... hence why i had extra oil in the car with me in the bottle.
Thank God I found it when i did ... otherwise I'd be looking for a new motor.

Yeah i have a feeling thats where oil is seeping out of my engine in the XR. Altough its not even loosing 1L a month, probally not even 1/2 a litre.
Oil Pressure is a bit low atm too, but still stays around the 1/2 way mark most times. Mine was diagnosed as a Head gasket leak, but if it were a head gasket leak then it would be getting worse...? But it still seems to stay the same.

Well ... I thought it was come from the headgasket ... that's cos the oil pressure switch sprays the oil out under pressure.
It drips ever so slightly at first ... dribbling down over the sump ... I thought it might have been a sump gasket as well. Good thing I found it with some help. It's a pain to see ... you need to peer through the intake manifold down to near where the coilpack sits (on models that have the coilpack) ... on the passenger side of the engine.

I was on a creeper with the car on jackstands.
Mind you it's the first time I have seen or changed one ... so it comes down to experience as well. I know what is involved now.

i find its easier going from the top, remove thermos and airbox. done it backyard style as i didn't have deep sockets back then.

And yeah much swearing and three attempts at removing the old switch and installing the new sender (fairmont cluster upgrade, there was nothing wrong with it).

Well the stands I had only allowed me to JUST get under the car ... trying to reach up into the engine bay without any room makes things very difficult ... especially without any deep sockets in the right size either ... I had to improvise by other means (plus swearing)

I didn't take the thermos out ... but took the airbox out though ... I managed to get my arm under the manifold from the front "JUST". And yeah doing the job without deep sockets is difficult

Maybe you should have changed it for a sender instead of a switch and upgraded the instument cluster while you were at it.

I didn't have time to fiddle with it ... I needed it back on the road as quick as possible for work.
I am thinking of getting aftermarket guages later anyway (Voltmeter and Oil Pressure gauge) and mount them down in front of the autoshifter pointing back up toward me (driver). I couldn't be bothered pulling my dash apart though to change a cluster.

cluster swap is EASY compared to chaning oil switch/sender.
(I've done both)
