i bought a 1989 CFI EA wagon the other day. took it for a squirt out the road, and when i pulled up the exhaust manifold was glowing. i checked the timing when i got home and it was ok. is this alright ? what is causing it ?

Running too lean could cause it. Or Everything could be spot on, but you have extractors and you gave it a GOOD squirt. The extractors are a lot thinner than the cast originals and so can get very hot, very quickly.

If you have good power, the timing is right (do you trust the pulley marks???) and you have no pinging (lean condition) then don't worry about it.

cheers
Scott

mine did the same when my unichip s**t itself a couple of months ago.. the car would suddenly lose 40% power while driving and the extractors would start to glow red hot... -being a lack of timing causing the extra heat due to the unichip s**t itself after 15 mins of driving..-every time...

im not aware of a blocked cat causing the extractors to glow.. more of a leaning out issue/timing issue.. if you had a blocked cat.. usualy it strangles the exhaust limiting the engine power.. -in the same kinda was as shoving fruit in your exhaust pipe..

i didnt mean it to sound as if the fruit would cannon out.. more kill the engine by restricting/blocking the exhaust pipe..

yeah i have an xf that has the same trouble, bought it as a bunky, started it up and revs were really lagged, idled ok tho, got out looked under the bonnet and the stock exhaust manifold was glowing red, this was in a matter of 20 - 30 seconds, melted the airbox and filter caught fire haha.

been told its the air fuel mixture.

Too retarded and too rich causes hot manifolds..
Double check timing by doing it as per specs..
If you don't bridge out eec connector it will be timed retarded.

to check, and reset the timing, i have been earthing the single grey connecter near the booster. then start the car, wait until it idles up, the check and set the timing. mine was at roughly 8 degrees with this method, and i moved it back to 10. i think it might be oxy sensor time. it smells rich out the exhaust. also is pretty crook on fuel.

yep, seems like it was rich mixture doing it. new oxy sensor, and the manifold doesn't get anywhere near as hot.
