Took it in, turns out the timing was about 30' out!
sever wear (in the 3 years) on the dizzy so far. but somehow, one day it went to s**t bad. mechanic set it with the computer and light and it was 0'd but he could see it was out by a s**t load so he used a different method to set it (more of a manual way with the light) and theres no flatspot, idles good and doesnt sound tinny now, temps are ridicuolusly low now, hasnt stalled out (touch wood). i told him everything i knew and also said i'd tried the lot. he saw everything i've replaced in the bay and knew i wasnt f**k about, i also mentioned 4 months previous i did a fairly big tow on a car from melbourne over the hume side of the ranges. he couldnt believe that it hadnt blown the head. to top it off, only charged me $40 for it! after completely taking the dizzy out, how goods that? he also mentioned that he's had many problems with EL ignitions, but none as bad as mine. I know there are two other members floating around with similar problems in very similar cars. dont trust the on board timing marks!

lol, how many things did you replace to find out it was this?? I'm definitely getting my dizzy replaced now. Cheers for the info

just to recap, ALL ignition, ALL fuel injection, IAT, Map, oxy, ecu, intake gasket, was about to try the temp sensor, two brake boosters, 1 cat, 3 vac hoses, 18 spark plugs, and probably some other stuff
just before you go blowing $$, just get a light and check all the timing marks. even just move it around manually and see where its good. this mechanic said it was so strange as it was said on the marks and the computers said it was right, but he looked over a few things and the thing was in a completely different spot thing pings now (wot) so i'll drive it for a while and knock it back a fraction later

in other news, your balancer is probably f**k, get a new one.
the outer ring has probably spun to 100% confirm, take all the plugs out, stick screw driver down number 1 plug hole and hold it there, gently rotate engine by hand till you feel screw driver hit piston. mark this position on balancer. rotate engine the other way till it hits the screwdriver again (aim is to have screwdriver in same position as before BTW ), and mark this position on balancer. if TDC mark isn't halfway between these two new marks, the outer ring on your balancer has spun.

i'd say it would be, but then why would the car all of a sudden start doing it one day?
if the ring spun, wouldnt the timing still be ok till the dizzy was reset?

na, Hybrids didnt get the gasket apparently. Yes mine is a hybrid and a very late one, two weeks before the AU. there is a possibility its an AU, but i doubt it.

Yeah mine didn't have an AU gasket, but it was fine right up until my engine blew from a cam not been put in proply (206,000km)

just to recap on this a little.
Took the car this weekend on a 600k round trip to a place called Rainbow. On the way there i sat for the most part at 120 - 135 and anything to 160 [YES i know, wrong] on the way back sat at the limit but came back a different way. I used to fill the car with regular and get about 380k's open road from a half tank highway ish (as shown on the dial) give or take 10k. with the longer trip this time i filled with prem and got 515k +/- 15k i would say. negatible wind, relitivly flat. I'd say i've got anything up to 25L left in the tank now too. But yeah, cars trooping along now !
