Can't remember so can someone remind me: Can this seal be renewed from outside or does the cover have to be removed? Motor is 4.0lL in an XH

I just had my harmonic balancer replaced on my ef 4.0 and I am pretty sure you have to take it off to get to the seal.

Nah what I meant was does the cover itself have to come off or does the seal get knocked in from the front?

are you talking about the crank to timing cover round seal behind the harmonic balancer?
this can be pryed out from the front and the new one tapped in, no need to remove harmonic balancer. this is what the repair manual says haven't done one myself so don't know how easy/hard it is.

You need a new manual! xhute0 the balancer needs to come off. The timing case stays on. Once balancer is off seal can be removed by levering it out. Tap the new one in after cleaning the recess it sits in. Make sure you tap it in straight. Helps to remove the radiator.

Don't wanna rub it in but I knew the balancer HAD to come off. My question was: does the seal itself get fitted from the front or the rear. Anyway thanks for the help Madmax. Didn't really wanna pull the radiator and the rest of that s**t off just to find out that I couldn't fit it from the front .
As for you Toddy: when are you gunna buy a car that isn't boring blueprint....and when that heap of snot cortina is ready I'll see you down the quarter with my "oil burner"........results will be posted (or are you scared?????? )

I have done them without removing the radiator, I have a balancer puller that I made yrs ago, to suit EA to EL, and its small enough to get them out. I'm going to make a tool to put them in, the seals, it will make that job easier.
