Not really hard to fit, bit of messing around required.

Only 'special' tool you need (or it's good to have anyway) is a 2 or 3 jaw puller to get the balancer out. Other than that I think just a shifter, a few spanners and a 13mm socket for the bolts. You will need to remove the thermos and possibly the radiator to give you room to get the puller in there too.

Took me and a mate about an hour (including flushing radiator while there), biggest thing to be careful with is when using the puller watch you dont damage the thread in the block that the centre bolt on the balancer uses.

EDIT: Not sure exactly when it's stuffed, I just know i replaced the one on my old EF Futura when it started wobbling....

When the rubber centre is stuffed the outer can move on the inner, which can cause vibration etc. The timing marks will also be out of alignment.

Also the centre that is inserted into the seal can become grooved, causing the seal to fail prematurely.

To prevent damage to the crankshaft thread hole, don't entirely remove the bolt. Leave it partly in, attach the puller to the balancer and wind the puller down onto the centre on the crankshaft bolt. Once the balancer is loose remove the bolt and then remove balancer by hand.

You will need to remove the radiator.

Actually.....now that you say moving, the one I replaced it with was a fixed one piece balancer, non genuine of course. Cost me $100 I think from Auto One. Fit and looked exactly the same....but didn't see how it could move as if it was two piece. Any idea on that max?

Usually there's the steel inner part, which bolts to the crankshaft, there's a rubber sleeve around that which dampens crankshaft vibrations, and then there's the outer steel part, which has grooves for the belt., If you bought a aftermarket one piece then obviously it can't move you wont have the same problem

I'd do it asap. When had my EF the outer part of the balancer moved in towards the engine and took out the crank angle sensor on the way, resulting in me getting a lift home on a tow truck.

In my experience - I was driving and suddenly lost power steering and engine light, battery light comes on and temperature goes to hot. After pulling over straight away to check it out it was obvious my crank shaft pulley (harmonic balancer) had slipped off the inner circle and fallen out. Causing the belt to fall off. Got the car towed home and picked up the new harmonic balancer for around 100 bucks and fitting it my self. I had extream trouble getting the hold one off (plenty of working room but didnt wanna budge off). I didnt need to remove the radiator though - but be careful - you dont wanna jank it off and then hit the linning on the radiator, lol. not good!

Good luck!

i had a mate of mine saying that my balancer was vibrating and i asked my old man and he said it was fine got to a couple of months down the track and while i exited uni lost all steering pulled over 50 metres up the road looked under the bonnet and saw the belts had flung off and the balancer was out. We ended up getting the belt back on and driving it home which wasn't far, ened up paying $140 - $180 to buy one and get it fitted as we couldn't be stuffed getting under the car and mucking around. They didn't take the radiator out or else they would have charged an extra 80 bucks.

I have heard people have changed them without taking the radiator out. Personally i don't think its worth the risk considering how easy it is to remove and refit the radiator.

Depends if you wanna pay the extra for coolant.

You'll need a balancer puller, a rattle gun, a 3/4 socket set and you will have to take thermo fans out.

Mine went a couple of weeks back and the vibrations were shocking, lucky it didn't come off.

Always a perfect time for a radiator flush :) or syphon coolant out and recycle it.

I usually borrow a puller. But whats the rattle gun for? your not going to get a rattle gun in there to undo the crankshaft bolt with or without the radiator.
1/2 socket set is more than enough, just need a long breaker bar.
