Hey guys, thought of this idea this morning, and was wondernig if it would work or if it has been done, i have a eb gt kit on my car, so it has the bonnet scoop inthe middle of the bonnet, however this scoop isnt for looks, it actually has the holes through the bonnet and on the scoop, i will be converting the 4l 6 to a bbm manifold, and was considering using a el/f airbox lid, turn it upside down, use a piece of silicon hose jonier between the tb and lid, use some brackets to hold the lid above the rocker cover, use some boot rubber seal or somethign similar around the edges of the lid so it can seal up to the bonnet, and it would recieve cold air with minimal intake plumbing.

now
1) would it make much difference with such a short inlet tract?
2) would it hurt economy or down low tourque?
and 3) does anyone know if this has been done?

here is a pic of the bonnet scoop so you have anidea how it gets the air into it

cheers

chris

I think shorter inlet plumbing does have a negative effect on low down torque.
Still, the cost of doing it temporarily wouldn't be too much, so if it fails, you could always go back to the traditional CAI.
Worth a shot me-thinks!

Not the largest scoop opening though are they?

it does have a smallish opening at the front, but then it has 3 vent style *slits* behind the opening, wich i would assume helps the air flow through the front hole, then the air going over these slits would inturn help suck it out, creating a vacum effect? would that sound about right?, if thats the case i think it would help alot with getting ltos of cold air over the filter and in a decent volume aswell

Go for it, good Idea, See if you can open up the GT bonnet scoop entry, let us all know what its like, be good on hot days, no engine bay hot air.

haha i had been thinking the same thing BUT

useing a small pod/panel filter in a custome enclosure under the scoop which sits on the engine rocker cover and goes to the tb

great for cai!

i was thinking of a pod aswell, but the gt scoop isnt exactly large enough to fit one in, and the ef/l lid isnt exactly deep, might have to angle it down towards the front so it doesnt foul on the bonnet, i only want it to seal to it :)

you would also find that area of the bonnet has a low air pressure and the scoop would not have a ram effect but would still require to suck air as opposed to being forced in, maybe keeping the standard CAI and adding a secondary intake on the scoop would be an idea? but not being sure of the clearances and the pipe work involved... talk to Antony at Alted as well..

but to the best of my knowledge that area can have very low air presure at times and pretty good odds might prove it to be detrimental as a primary intake.

my mates ef xr6 has a similar cai setup except that he has a pod coming straight out of the bonnet. Other than an2.5 exhaust with extractors this is his only mod and has run a best of a 14.2 down a WSID.

A small picture of the car can be seen in Performance ford magazine volume 5 edition 7 on page 111. ''Although the narative description says it is turbo, i can assure you that it is not''. I am trying to get a copy of his time slips and a photo, and will post.

I am now working on my own version of this set up to see if i can duplicate his results!

the thing that i think of is, if it was sucha low pressure spot, why do factory bonnet scoops reside in this area, not to mention the little hornet scoops etc etc, i might be wrong but it makes sense to put a filter there

Give it a shot, shouldn't be too hard to revert back to the original setup if it doesn't exactly work out

i have also thought of this, and dicsusseed it with my mechanic, he then came up with the idea of a custom airbox (or just a 'professionaly' butchered one) that sits ontop of the rocker and leads directly into the throttle body, then getting an old school reverse facing scoop (very retro). the theory behind this is that the air gets sucked in from the pressure difference at the opening in the back of the scoop.

mechanic did say that the first idea would work, but this is totaly different.
