As a matter of interest, about 7 years ago when I had to do the head gasket on my ED (due to water leak at the exhaust side of the head) I had to use a blood big piece of pipe on the end of my 1/2 inch drive breaker bar to loosen the bolts - they each came with a loud "SNAP" and "CREEaaaK!". Every single one was DRY on the threads - in fact there was light rust on the threads.
In short - IMO my particular head gasket blowing was due to FACTORY f**k!!! The bolts are meant to be torqued with the threads lightly oiled - put in dry there's no way they ended up with sufficient clamping force on the head.

all bolts being torqued are meant to be lightly oiled to avoid binding, the bolts on the exaust side will always be harded to undo due to that side being alot hotter than the intake.
Torquing the head up to 90nm then another 180 deg turn, your head would be like a crinkle cut chip!!! |

What about a turbo motor? I want to re-torque mine and am wondering if I should go alot tighter?

These are torque to yield bolts.Go over there stretch and they loose tension properties...
On some engines the the bore can be pulled in all directions...Distortion is an issue...

My point was that I wonder seriously if the EA-ED "Notorious for blown headgaskets" syndrome hasn't been due simply to factory stuffup - ie. my car's engine was definitely assembled with the head bolt threads dry so no, there's no way they'd have had sufficient tension. As far as the specific torques then obviously it'll depend on the type of gasket being used - those procedures of 90/180 or even 30/120 I'd suspect are for the metal type AU gaskets - tho I've gotta admit that 90/180 seems extreme even for that. I'd use the most recent Ford recommendation.
