I know this had been covered before, but I just wanted some updated views from you guys.
I was just fitting my head and was doing up the head bolts. I torqued them up to 40 Nm then 80Nm all was good, then i went to go the next step at 120 Nm, first one was ok, second one went ok, third one didn’t really get any tighter at all, then snap. The damn thing broke. Now the head gasket documents said to go to 40Nm then 90dec turn, but in reading previous post I decided to go with what I read on here. Also last head I put on, I did the 40, 80 then 120 with no problems, but that time I used genuine Ford head bolts. I'll get some Ford bolts tomorrow and a new head gasket, what is a "safe" torque setting to aim for?? Cheers |

Quote: I agree about getting our post up again. But the head gasket situation be carefull, I work at a ford wrecker specialist and run my own performance buisness, ford are renown for head gasket problems ever wondered why?
Extensive tests show the torque settings are wrong even a few mates at a few ford dealerships agree. I have done at least 200 head gaskets on fords that i can show on paper work. I use au head studs and torque down to 80NMs than 180Dec turn Belive me you can't over squash a head gasket esspesially an au or ACL race and you won't crack the head by over tightening that is a large block off alloy, I'll touch wood but i havn't had one come back yet and i won't do it any other way. When you do 40NMs and 90Dec turn you can do tighter with a standard half inch ratchat its not tight. I also spray HYLOMAR on the gasket as well for reasurance. |

that guy is wrong.
the blts are made to be streched a set amount when tight that why there is a degree setting just do what ford say to do. if you get an ACL gasket ACL tell you the same thing. that guy is also the reason you can't trust every thing you read on the internet. |

I don't know the proper figures but don't use Ford's settings; it is why they always have headgasket problems and what not, too bloody tight!!
Mr Mark at IT'S PERFORMANCE knows what he's talking about mate. Who are you to say that someone is completely wrong? Yes you can disagree, but not totally dismiss something like that.

Performance Inc say's the gaskets blow because of Fords torque settings. I think I'd feel better having the gasket go every 150,000 Kms than taking the risk of having bolts snap off in the block.

ok, got new head bolts. Started to torque up the cam chain bolt and it started to feel funny, I unbolted it and it was stretched. Got a second bolt and another torque wrench and found that the first torque wrench I had was stuffed, hence the reason why the first set of head bolts broke..
As with the torque figures. If you go 40Nm then a 90Dec turn, it actually is 120Nm. So in reality if you go 40Nm 80Nm 120Nm, you end up with the same torque head but in a little bit smaller steps. Thanks for the help Tim |

When we did the bolts up on the waggin to ford spec, we had a blown head gasket within 15-20km of driving.
try 45nM and 180deg

try 45nM and 180deg Yeah but was it warped when you put it on? When I had my gasket replaced I fully reco'd the head and got it machined. Car = fine I would say just crank it on to spec + a little extra for luck. not 2 or 3 times harder!
