G'day all,
I have just purchased a 3.9L head from Troyman that I intend throwing on the NA. I am going to get it shaved and crack tested before installing it and was wondering if any of you Newie guys could recommend a good head guy....(please, no crude comments required ) I live behind the Cardiff industrial park, so I'm sure there is probably a few within a stones drop from my back fence, but word of mouth recommendations go a long way in my book! Cheers, Mick

Does anybody have any tricks for removing head bolts with stripped heads. They aren't that bad yet...managed to get most of them off (10) but I have 2 that just wouldn't budge and I end up stipping the heads and rolling the edges (just one turn over, but enough to piss me off because I know the socket is not gunna grab now )
I've already conceded that the rocker gear will have to be removed and I'll probably have to knock the bolt heads off with the ole angle grinder, but thought I would just ask the question. Thanks Mick

for the head bolts are you using a 14mm impact socket? i busted 2 good 14mm's before i learnt my lesson, and then did the old wack the s**t outta the bolt, wd40, then more wacking (loosen the thread) then impact socket them off.
if that fails you have to weld a nut on or grind the top off. |

I'm learning too I'm using 14mm 1/2 socket, was trying with breaker bar, but end up using my big a** torque wrench.
I have now removed the rocker gear and cam, but don't have a tool to remove the valve springs. So I guess I just have to get the old angle grinder out and lop the fookers off and then remove the bolts with stilsens! I'll get it off.....nothing like a little set-back to get me motivated

I had to give the headbolts (well, one of them) a good whack with the hammer, I whacked it about 20-30 times or so, then the headbolt gave in, from there I proceeded to take my anger out on the headbolt itself

Did you remove the bolts out in any order? or did you remove them in a spiral sequence? If you just removed it in any particular order, the head may now have lifted a bit causing the last 2 bolts to be tighter, try putting the other bolts back in and then removing the 2 stuck ones.
Failing that, tap the head of the bolt nicely to loosen it up and try again. If you have rounded the nut, try filing (if you have enough patience) the nut down to a slightly smaller sized hex, but not too small that the next sized lower socket will slip over the nut...instead just slightly bigger so you can bash the socket in and jam it in nicely...then try and remove the head. (note...in doing this, it will be difficult to get the nut back out of the socket) If all that fails...weld a bolt on top of the nut or angle grinder. Good luck. phong =P~

Thanks for the tips guys....I'm not very patient, so Mr angle grinder was my friend today.
Lucky I had bought a new head, as this one will be going to the scrap metal yard in the sky No prizes for guessing where the head failed. And as you can see from the pics, almost every water channel on the left side of the block was completely blocked and half on right side. Guess I have some cleaning to do Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: No.4 has had a steam cleaning Attachment: Attachment: OK, now onto my original subject....where to get the head checked/shaved? Cheers, Mick

Cheers, Mick I believe price engineering at Cardiff would be able to do it, failing that headmen at wickam have a good rep

OK, you guys Ya's did a good job of trying to confuse the f**k outa me! When I looked up Price Engineering and contacted them, they were on Munibung and manufacture Go-carts
Luckily this seems to happen a bit and he put me onto "Pryce Engines" who are on Pendlebury Rd. You's were right about one thing though, he was a top bloke to chat with and is gunna give the head the works treatment. Full service + crack testing and pressure testing of the water jacket for around $280. Should have it back in a couple of days Cheers, Mick

OK...Pick up the head tomorrow Turns out it was in pretty good condition and didn't need a full service All they had to do was crack/pressure test it and give it a shave job and it's ready to go.....for half the price I was originally quoted, happy days
Now onto my next question Can somebody steer me in the right direction for a tech doco on setting the cam and timing....remember I'm a 6 cyl newby but I have a fair idea, but I'm an instructions man and like to follow a guide where possible so any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mick

is your engine at top dead center? from the picks id doesnt look like it. i was told that it would be a hell of a lot easyer if it was, just putting the OHC in and that after. i have a 4.0 so i dont know if it is different. oh and are you going to get the head shaved too? (the new one u have)

Yeah mate, I still have to turn the engine to TDC and give the block a bit of a clean up. Head has been shaved as stated above...pick up tomorrow. And yeah, it is the same as the 4.0 AFAIK

hi mick
i knew that head would have been good . aslong as the cam sprocket hasnt moved or the chain hasnt skiped any teeth. its not necessary to put it on tdc.. (i would zip tie the chain to the sprocket first) you should be able to just fit the head, torque it up..and when you sit the cam in the head (oil up the cam first)rotate the cam so the locating pin on the cam sprocket lines up with the grove in the cam. you can actually push the sprocket onto the cam before you fit the rocker assembly. once the sprocket is on the cam fitt and tighten the rocker assembly tighten up the cam sprocket bolt and release the cam chain last. aslong as that cam chain sprocket hasnt moved you should be fine.. |
