How often should we change the head gasket?

Depends! People who neglect the cooling system are going to be replacing it much sooner than those who don't. The previous owner of my car replaced it after 76,000km. Others, I've read, last 160-200,000 km.

Lol its not something you change at regular service intervals, you only really replace it when it blows which can happen at any time.. Some could last 100,000kms, others could fail earlier and others could fail well after. When it goes you'll know about it.

Why? dont you guys? cheers so what's the longest u've seen a head gasket last for? and just out of curiosity, if i wanted to purposely blow the head gasket, what do i do? if i know this then i could find a way to avoid it

I myself have only ever witnessed my own one go. Others on here have reported it to last over 180,000kms, other longer, others shorter.
The one on my Fairmont would of let go around the 200,000km mark at a rough guess. Engine had been kept in pretty much mint condition throughout its life, always serviced, always had regular fluid flushes etc done at ford according to the log books it came with, until it got to the owner before me who luckily only had it for a few months. It didnt blow as in coolant getting into the oil, but rather blew out the side of the water jacket and very slowly leaked coolant down the exhaust side of the block. It was so un-noticeable that i didnt even have to top the coolant up at all and only noticed the coolant leak when i fitted my extractors. I could of got away with it cause it still felt very strong and driveability was completely unaffected but decided to replace it at around the 220,000kms mark. In the end it is inevitable really, it will blow eventually, or something will go wrong with the head and you'll need to replace it. Try to prevent the car from overheating and keeping your cooling system in check would be the best way reduce the chance of it blowing i guess. |

Can't remember when my head gasket blew on my original engine...but it blew because I gave it a fair bit of abuse with neglect to coolant flushes etc. How ever I did do regular oil changes. Also a seized water pump/dead pump also contributed to it's demise. I think it was along the lines of 130000km. Maybe a little more.
If you want to purposely blow the head gasket...with a cold engine, rev the s**t out of it...red line it...if you want do it at the track so you can rip some skids for fun. If not, try running the car without coolant...highly not advisable but if you really wanted to you can. However if you are worried about the head gasket and want to replace it...then just do it, don't blow it purposely because you might break something else along the way. Just my 2c

I do mine every service. Oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, spark plug leads, coil, welsh plugs, water pump, front and rear main seals, tappet cover, timing cover and head gasket lol.
Having said that, the previous owner changed mine at around the million km mark when the motor got freshened up (rings and bearings, no hone or overbore). And the ex cab is on its way to 800,000kms and hasn't had one yet. The actual cab (vx commodore) needs 2 complete engine rebuilds by then. |
