i just got a qoute to have my mates head gasket done as its leaking oil from the front it might be the timeing chain cover, and was qouted $700 to $800 that includes a head gasket (graffite), head bults, shaved, welded if neded and i asked about the possability of fitting au head gasket and head bults he laught at me for asking that question and got another quote the second one wants $1,500 thats everything radiator water pump, thermostat and things like that so my questions are.......
1 are thease reasonable quotes ? 2 whats a decent recon head worth? 3 will the au gasket and bults fit? 4 how long would it take to do? 5 how long would a head gasket last? 6 is there a way to stop the leak on the timeing chain cover with out spending bit $$$$ the car is a 1993 eb 4.0l thanks all

the mechanic is a numnuts the AU gasket/head bolts are what is supplied int he gaskit kit for any E series block

that seems like a good quote. though you should cetainly consider the idea of removing and professionally cleaning the radiator and flushing the cooling system and changing oil and filter in 500-100 klms.
and as frank said AU gaskets and bolts are the way to go. Ford only sell one type of bolt now though they do still sell the older E series gaskets.

be wary if its leaking from the crank seal & they just whack another seal in to fix it.
i just went through this $$$ process and had a timing kit fitted, and now its still leaking from there.... turns out the seal can wear a groove in the shaft and wont seal properly..... needs a speedi sleeve fitted |

i have a leak in the front of my EA allso, after a steam clean it was found leaking from the head. was quoted $750 for the graphite type from my mechanic in Lawnton. (AT Motorsport) which included surfacing the head.
i went into pro-torque this morning to get a set of head bolts ($49) and they said ACL dont do the AU steel head gaskets so i had to get it from ford parts for $75 (gave it to me for $66 trade price).
part no. ER6051A ive done a few heads in the past but this is the first time ive done one with OHC. the timing chain looks like the only hastle so it should be ok. i personally think the steel gasket is best for the alloy\cast iron setup and is suited for high boost (EZY10 on ff.com.au uses a steel gasket and runs consistant low 10's). imo carbon\graphite would resist burn out but if its too soft it can blow out from expansion stress just like the standard blue gaskets. im certain the steel will never need replacing unless there is a problem with the head itself.
