I just replaced the head gasket on my ed. It was around $100 (might have been less) from ford for the au gasket and au bolts. You should get a new set of bolts as they're meant to be one use only.
The AU gaskets and bolts bolts are both meant to be better as well, but we'll see. The bloke at parts actually said they don't sell ED gaskets anymore, so i had to ask specifically for the AU one; he didnt seem to know the AU gaskets work on e-series:P.

apparently the stock EA-ED (maybe ef/el as well) gaskets last around 100,000ks
and you can get a complete gasket and bolt kit off ebay for $70 so if your not going to be doing a performance build any time soon, id go down that route also get the hed faced which will be $50 so all up $120 + some new oil and bits n pieces, but can def be done very cheap

It is more reliable then the standard composite gaskets. It is required to get new head bolts...so don't skimp on those...they are Torque-To-Yield bolts, so once they have been torqued once, they will stretch, so reusing head bolts is not recommended at all. The head will need to be checked and restraightened (if required...)and while it's out, get it tested (pressure and crack test I think), cleaned and valves checked. It can cost $200 upwards depending what needs doing or what you want to get done as well as the shop. When I did the head gasket on my engine, it cost me about $600 all up. phong =P~

well if u want the cheap way then the regular gasket will still last 5 to 10 years...the AU style gasket relies on the deck being very clean and straight
