I check the sensor and it on the right hand side of the coil. The oil sensor is on the left hand side. I looked in the manual and couldnt find anything.
The timing looks fine. Can it be anything else.

Ok so we are talking about an EL on Dual Fuel or straight gas ?
compression in all cylinders is fine... Timing is good ... if duel fuel does it idle/run the same on Petrol and Gas? You have no mods to the car at all ? |

Straight gas. No mods except an KnN.
I had enough of the stuffing around so the car is booked in for Thursday at crescent motorsports.

I didn't take the car to crescent motorsport.
Ive replaced the knock sensor and still has the same problem. The car goes fine but has no power at all. And doesnt want to idle. It is back firing aswell if you give the car a little. It sometimes idles at less then 500rpm but soon goes off. I still have to fix the timing. Could ignition timing (spark) be related to these problems? When i used the timing light, the spark lights just after the mark (tdc). Around 2-3 cm after. how would i go by fixing this?

Hi There Did you put the ECU into 'diagnostic' mode before checking the timing ??? If its 2-3cm past the TDC mark in a clockwise direction - sounds very iffy. Not sure what the timing is on straight gas though. Anyway I'm sure the guys on here will help get it sorted for you. Good Luck |

I did not put the ECU into diagnostic mode.
What would that do?

Do you have a workshop manual ???
I only have an EA which has a different procedure but, I 'think', on the EL there is a 'port' or something in the fuse box under the dash which has to be bridged to put it into diagnostic / timing mode. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. This allows you to set the BASE timing. Try this first and see how you go. |

Not having it in diagnostic mode won't give a proper reading as the ECU could be doing anyting with the timing, although generally it should still be to the left of the IGN mark a bit i find when not in diagnostic mark. If its showing at the TDC mark, or worse, to the right of it, then it's badly retarted and will cause your problems.
You really need it in diagnostic mode though to see what the base timing really is, as it's also what the ECU uses as it's base figure i believe. |

Ok. The light flicks on the right hand side of TDC. I read somewhere (here or manual) about 'bridge for timing mode' thingy. Im pretty sure the manual doesnt say anything like that though.
Ill find the manual and see if it has it in there.

How would i bridge the two pins on the port in the fuse box.
Do i need them connected for the whole time or can i bridge them then start car then take it off then do timing? EDIT... I read the sticky on what to do.

ok... i got the car running. but it wont rev passed 3000-3500rpm. it starts to struggle at 3000. THIS is when the TDC and spark are about 3-4cm from the left of the mark on the harmonic balancer. The car idles very rough.
Now when i do the timing properly, TDC and spark match, the car has no power and will back fire and die at 1000rpm. The idle is rough. At this stage, im thinking the cam is out and not lined up properly. Any ideas will be helpful. Cheers Adam

The knock sensor will effect timing under 4500rpm as it detects a knock and will retard the timing until the knock stops.

I just read that you may have a timing issue. Bridge the left top and bottom pinds in the diagnostic plug in the dash. Ensure engine had correct idle speed (750rpm in park) and is at running temp. Start engine and the revs will raise to approx 1500rpm, they will then drop to approx 750rpm. After approx 2 min the car will almost stall then revs will stablise. After that check timing (TDC +/- 2 deg for EL I6) you will only have 1 min approx to do timing. If you go over that start again. Now EL is different to EF and before (Check timing in diagnostic straight after revs come down from 1500rpm)
