Hey,
Checked oil the other day on my '94 ef XR6 (340,000km) and discovered that it was an milky brown colour and thick white build up under the newly cracked oil cap on the rocker cover. No loss in power, but low oil pressure and leaking welch plug. Previous owner ran it on water by the looks of it and the exhaust has a rattle. (cat I quess.) Anyway, I intend to replace the head gasket with AU metal type. Should I look at any other areas, other than welch plugs, to be repaired once pulled apart. Any advice would be helpful. Cheers all. |

Hey Revcore,
Yeah it begun to idle roughly, (reason for looking under bonnet). Hot day on short distance oil gauge drops to alert sounding. |

I'll be doing my head gasket soon and I am going to change all the welsh plugs if they are not brass units. Easier to replace them wen you don't have to work around manifolds, incase they do go in the future......Maybe at 340000 you might need to do this....how much to they cost and look at hiow easy it will be now

Yep,
Sounds like the smart thing to whilst things are pulled apart. Just wondering what further damage could be done while driving short distances with stuffed head gasket, as I can't afford to miss work this week and I have to get there by the car. Mainly concerned about stuffing the Head due to extra heat. It's only a small of coolant leaking in, but it's only going to get worse I quess. Thanks all. |

the car will run hotter. and maybe if u leave it too long the water may get in the bearings etc and start corroding

if u keep driving it there may be a possibility of the head warping if it gets to hot

Don't flame me...
But how about just replacing the head bolts ??? Torque the crap out of them and save alittle more for a good second hand motor or rebuilt block..With that many kays it maybe worth it??? A good second hand engine can be bought for $600. It could cost you twice that if you get a mechanic to do head gasget only ??? Mind you I do all that sort of work myself....

I do intend on replacing the engine with one of thoses $1,500 statge 1 jobs that I saw posted on this site.(can't remeber name of workshop)
Mainly to increase trade in value for an BA XR6. Is the Stage 1 as close to the Ef XR6 output? Or is it really worth the efford and just get what I can for trade in? Cheers |

Na mate just good second hand engine...The comercial or ute's have older engines in latter model's imo is the way to go...Spending good money for bad, spending too much is wasting $$....Hire an engine hoist a gregories and a few slabs with a few mates with tools NO trouble...

Don't forget there are welsh plugs in the back of the block, you need to take the trans out to get to them. Might as well do the rear seal while your there.

ffs dont drive it if you've got that oh so nice looking coffee cream in your engine, it's one of the quicker ways to f**k your bearings
get the head gasket replaced, flush the block and oil galleries out with diesel (disconnect the ignition, fill the sump with diesel, crank it for a few seconds, and repeat the process till all of the s**t is out) then refill the sump with the engine oil of your choice
