i got a new head etc put on about a year ago, motor started playing up pritty soon after that, they said "rings". so i just put a stock ef motor in.
enough of back story. i pulled my old motor down as i needed the head (for new project), and when i did i noticed that the head and block have 16 water holes, and the gaskit only has 2 at the back, and pencil sized hole's along the exhaust side. there are clear marks on the gaskit where the water has been blocked. was wondering if this is meant to be like that or was this dodgy work? can upload pic's if needed, might take some time. thank you, Rushed |

Mate I had the same thing on ax XB head once years ago. I made the gasket bigger to match the holes in the head and block. Not sure if I was meant to but it seemed to work OK.
Interested to hear that others think.

The gasket is meant to be like that. it forces the water the back of the block.
if it was all open the rear of the engine wouldn't get enough cooling |

(from phongs guide) i was sort of hoping that tickford, is this the best way to have it on the next motor? i have spent so much $ redoing stuff that i have 'fixed' once already on this car, i want to do things right the first time. cheers for the help so far. Rushed |

i'd be using a genuine AU gasket straight out the packet with no changes.
the small holes are there to let a small amount of cooler water through to cool the exhaust area of the head (exhaust side of the chamber and the ports) |

Rushed Well that was my block, with the AU gasket. Runs fine without any problems . Genuine AU gasket is the way to go, as tickford mentioned. phong =P~
