G'day thrillseekers. I have a few questions:
1) Can someone tell me if an EB head will fit an AU block? I understand, from my research, that the EB head flows the best out of all the E series. The head will have mods as well.

2) will an AU motor (block) fit into an EL. Engine mounts, sump etc.

3) will an EL sump fit the AU block?

My intention is to fit an EB head to an AU block and put it into an EL ( If it all goes together :? )

The other alternative is to fit an EB head to a hybrid EL block, but I haven't been able to find one yet (hybrid block that is) that I can reco while I drive mine.

Comments please ...but keep them clean

the EB head also has poor air speed to go along with the flow.

if your going to port it as well you would be better off start with a later head from an ef or el

The EF head seems to be the best from what Ive read, and seen.

1) An E series head bolts onto an AU block, aslong as you use the same valve train as the head. (ie EB head, EB valve train).

2) An AU block will fit it, but the K frame needs modification... you'll need to cut a section off, for the sump to clear. If you use an AU sump.

3) No, an EL sump will not fit an AU block if you are running an AU crank.. as the AU crank is much stronger and uses those girdle things to reinforce the crank.

Good luck with it all.

Cheers

Hmmmm. Thanks for the input. Seems as though my ideas wont work. What I was trying to achieve was a mix of the best of both worlds. A good head with a strong block. I have no intention of modifying the "K" frame, so I guess that's another idea out the window.

Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

Now, back to the drawing board :D

I still have the intention of rebuilding a hybrid. If I can find one. And getting maybe a JMM head done. I have also read of a crowd in Qld., that do good head mods too, but I can't think of their name at the moment. I have kept the article though, and their head mods are mainly centered around removing the shrouds from the valves in the combustion chambers.

The k frame mod is nor complex nor always neccessary.. Ive heard by playing with the sump (grinding it thinner) this can also be achieved. But most people don't like that idea... Its been done before, and there's was a doco on putting an AU engine into an EF/EL... Ive got it somewhere.

But, if you don't wanna mess around with that, stregnthening the EF/EL block is also an option. While the AU block was stronger the E series block was damn strong too.

Cheers

I would be interested in seeing the doco if you can find it. I would not be too keen on making the sump a bit thinner. Obviously the sump doesn't clear the subframe by much, if all it takes is a couple of passes with the grinder!

If you wanted a strong e-series block, you could hunt around for a hybrid block.

They use an AU crank and EL sump, with no girdle to be seen. Not that it matters to the crank im sure, just more to do with the overall stiffness of the bottom end and how it transmits the noise and vibration.

Yep, that's what Ive got at the moment, an EL hybrid. That's why I wish to keep it the same way.
It seems that hybrid engines are hard to find. Either that or wreckers don't know what to look for.

I missed the last line in your post about you already having a hybrid.

Alot of wreckers dont know about them, but some do. If the block has no head, the only way of telling is that the block is unpainted. If the sumps off, the crank part number starts with the WR2 AU crap.

Or if the head is on, look for the 96DA / 96DT part number, or a build date of 2/98 on.

Try looking at Jolly Rogers wreckers in Dandenong. Last time I was there, they had a few taxi's with hybrid engines... And most of the parts there are dirt cheap.

Excellentfninfo!!! I will take that and use it. I agree that most wreckers do not know what they are looking at. Thanks a lot!!!!
