Heya people

this has been happening for quiet a while now but i didn't think its a great of a deal.

Anywho when i start the car and let it idle to warm up, the head lights and all interior lights are on as normal, but as i accelerate the lights get brighter. I know that it should go brighter due to the charging but it shouldn't be so noticeable i dun think. And when i slow down at the traffic lights the head lights dim a little and interior lights dim as well which are quiet noticeable. even when the indicators are turned on or climate control.

Now i dunno whats causing this or if its a normal thing. but could there be some wires which might need replacing?

Ive got an EA fairmont Ghia.

cheers

phong

How old is the battery? If it's not the battery dying it may be the alternator on the way out.
Of course I could just be talking out my a*** but there is something niggling at the back of my mind about this problem. I think I have seen it before in a mates car. Let me think.....

i'd be looking at the alternator, or close to that region at least, sounds like its overcharging/undercharging

if thats the case, it will make the batterys life expectancy shorter also

Yep, I agree X3ROS. Sounds like the alternator is doing something weird. I know that when I changed my water pump I rooted the alternator because it got full of water (my fault, had a brain f@rt) but it died steadily but surely.
It had the same sort of symptoms like this, dim lights, hard to start sometimes etc.

Phongus it would be worth just getting the alternator checked by an auto elec. Should do it for nothing.

Sounds like a dud alternator. In particular, the voltage reg.

Mate of mine had the same problem. A nice new Bosch alternator fixed all of these problems.

yep I'd be checking the regulator. It MAY become a big problem especially if you're over charging the battery - ie. getting much more than 13.8V when at high revs. You will 'boil' the battery and kill it. Also if it goes much above 15V you may start killing other electrics.

Get it checked.

Yeah, best bet would be regulator. Mines stuffed, but seems to be ok. Not overcharging, just the alternator light stays on at idle after starting. Once the revs hit 1400 the light drops out, and wont come back on, even at idle. Just had the thing reconditioned so its a bit annoying, but oh well. He only did bearings, not regulator. Ill live :D

Problem with that, is when it dies next, you won't know.

Also i would check the main earth lead under the car,
the one that goes from your engine to the body of the car.
