Good- afternoon all.
Have the problem of the extractor heat destoying accel & clutch cables. Am I better off wrapping the cables with heat wrap( thermotec) or just getting a custom heat shield made up to cover extractors?? If I should fabricate a shield what is the best material to use for the application?> Any help is appreciated- as I am at wits end with this problem!!

A lot of people on here (including myself) have a stainless steel headshield that a member on here was producing - these look good, but stainless steel is not a good material for a heat shield.
I'd definately recomend wrapping your cables in heat wrap - but I would strongly advise not to wrap the headers in them. I've ordered in a header blanket for my headers which I'll fit and have my stainless steel heat sheifl on top to cover up the yucky look. mm nice find on the header blanket tweedle dee!
i agree on the wrapping the cables can you re route them at all if enough slack ? if a heat sheild/blanket is not what you are after gettign the headers ceramic coated will really lower the temps as well plus it looks bling

Here is a pic of the stainless piece that twr7cx is referring to. As he says, it's not really a heatshield. After having a close look at them at Koala Park, I thought of getting two and sandwiching proper insulation between them. This should make a good heat reflector and deflector allowing airflow to carry away heat to the rear. That header blanket looks easier and cheaper, I've never used one and I'm not sure what effect, if any, retaining a lot of heat so close to the head will have.

AFAIK the blanket only covers the top of the headers - not the underside (as would be covered if the header wrap is used). I'll know more when it arrives. |

Mate, are you getting it from Rocket Industries or some-one else? I see in the pic, it doesn't wrap around and shouldn't be as severe on the pipes as wrap is said by some to be. I'm willing to try it pending your experience with it. I'm only basing my doubts on heat transfer properties from wrapping super heated steam pipes, where the wrapping type insulation had to go all the way to be effective. if it didn't the hot spot caused problems. Headers get hot enough so the principles the same. If it works great for you it will be easier than making a sandwich and I like 'easy'. LOL Paul

My car goes like a 250ci XE now!!! before it was going as quick as a NA BA XR-6! the accelerator cable is soooooooooo screwed, it came off clip and touched extractors, and bent outer cable so mmm u can imagine !i have half throttle. and I am not going to changed the cabkle until I wiould out some sort of heat deflection- blanket looks good mate, how much??

Hey Paul - yes I've ordered it from Rocket Industries.
I'm no expert in any way about insulating heat. I just want something that'll cover the top of the extractors and help prevent the heat from rising. Having it open on the underside I figure may help cool it if any air comes up from under the car... I'll see how it goes. |

I've been doing some re-checking since your first post and many are against wrapping the headers. I last wrapped headers when asbestos wasn't a dirty word LOL It was ugly, hard to keep on and the enclosed heat played havoc with the tubes, warping etc. Mind you, that wasn't highway driving either but red hot pipes still melt things. The blanket seems a good compromise and should keep a lot of heat down where it can be left behind. Unless you tell me they're a fraud and they suck [which I doubt] I'll give it a try, after all Thermotec have a pretty good name in the States. Please let me know how happy you are with it. If you read the small print for Pacemaker extractors/headers, if you wrap them in any sort/form of insulation, the warranty is void.

I reckon since mine are about 3 years old tghe warranty is probably over already now. |

It took less than 4 months for my ginie extractors to crack after I wraped them and my car isn't a daily driver. I would not recomened that you do it as the welds crack.

I don't know the warranty on Genies, but I was reffering to the Pacemakers.

I had an EL Exhaust manifold shield converted to fit my extractors. It still lets fair amount of heat onto cables...but it is a hot day here in melb, 30 or so.. if this doesnt work what will!!!! geezus this is sooooooo s**t me up the wall.
sticky clutch stroke, stuffed accelcable....replace oh yeah, stuffed afgain in 2 weeks!!! WHAT TO DO?? sell car maybe....
