Does it have climate control?

IIRC there are 2 temp senders in the thermostat housing - one for the climate control, the other for the indicator and ECU.
I don't know if they're identical (logic would say yes - but not always). Did you mix the wires up ??? Otherwise, I'd suspect the wire back to the dash - dirty connections, etc, being in the engine bay. I'd check this first over the indicator, but obviously doesn't remove the possibility of the indicator being cactus.

There's a coolant temp sensor .... and a cylinder head temp sensor as well.
The CHT sensor is located at the back of the head on the driver's side.

depends ... I found out with my AU it only uses a CHT sensor ... but the E-series use both. The coolant temp sensor reads the temp of the actualy coolant ... where the CHT sensor read the temp of the actual alloy head.
Mine reads from the back of the head to read to thet gauge. I'd need to have a read up and see where the reading comes from for yours.

You'll only have the 2 in the lower thermostat housing - the one on the back of the head only came in with the AU's and onward AFAIK.
This is assuming your running an E series haed.
