Hi all!
Over the past few weeks I have noticed my steering is getting heavier. I checked the front tyre pressures and all was Ok. Also checked the power steering fluid and it wasn't low. It hasn't been changed since I got the car (2 years) so maybe that is it? Any suggestions? Thanks!

I doubt it would be your PS fluid. I never changed mine in my EA and I owned it 6 years, power steering worked perfectly.
More likely the pump is failing and not delivering enough pressure.

Any signs of belt slippage on the p/s pump?

I'll check. The belt has only been on a few months so maybe....

hhahaa...yeh...ive had a few hard reverse parks in the val...not much room to move trying to turn without moving the car backwards, near impossible. Old cars were made to beef up the driver i think haha, at least the steering cant leak...

have done 2 years rebuilding power steering units on gold coast, and can tell you that the ghia's have a variatronic rack in them which makes the steering lighter at slow speeds and heavier under normal driving conditions. they use a differant pinion and valving to a falcon which is where your problem will be. they have a plastic dampner in the pinion area which over time becomes brittle and brakes, then the peices get to the pump and block the valve. a good power steer mob will fit up a new rack, clean out the pump, flush your lines out, and ask if you would like a filter fitted to stop the plastic getting into the pump in future. if they don't offer a filter ask for one. and yes power steer fluid is like engine oil, brake fluid, trans fluid, and coolant, they all need changing on average every 2 years.

apparently ef/l's use different ps fluid than older models. should be clear. either that or the guy at pedders was trying to pull one on me. mine has gone black and he said its because it has normal fluid in it. will eventually wreck the rack which he said would be around 4-500 bucks. change fluid over + add filter he reckond around $150.

I too was in pedders not a week ago n they told me that EL MUST use different fluid to the EF as they use different setups to compensate for driving shudder..
He rekons to fluvh it PROPERLY and put new fluid in is 125, dunno bout filter tho, have to ask. Dunno how much they know about their fords in general tho, as they seems to think my car was an ef falcon, even tho they could see it commented on it when i came in, nothing worrying but makes you think how much they really know as most of my mates who no NOTHING or dont even care about cars can pick differences between most cars on the bloody road!

rack should cost about $360-400 fitted which should include flushing out the rest of the system, there is 2 different types of filter i know of 1 fits inside the low pressure hose which will probably cost up to $35 fitted but the better option is a filter similar to a fuel filter which has a magnet inside it, it is more expensive at about $65 fitted but a much better option. don't quote me on those prices has been about 12 months since i left that job to go back to being a mechanic. yes the ef/l's and au and ba's all use that clear oil but being in the trade have found that ea onwards falcons and vn oward commodores (sorry did not mean to swear) all do better with the clear oil which is available at any ford dealership. i even use it it my xf ghia just because it is better quallity oil, it also helps with that shudder you may get in all falcons ea to el.
