Hi everyone,

I am having a problem with my eb wagon, it is blowing lots of smoke sometimes more than others usually when it is cold, it keeps fowling up the plugs with i think is oil really quickly but it is doing it on all of the plugs not just one or two. When i put new plugs in it, it is ok for a few days not missing but still smoke but eventually it starts missing again and still smoke. the smoke is thick and smells oily and fuely. i have tried a pile of things but nothing seems to work, there is no oil in the breather pipes, it has a new distributor and leads and coil. looks like oil is getting in from somewhere but i dont know where.

Any help would be eternally appreciated.

Yep i changed the head and the head gasket twice, the first time i put a new gasket on the old head and it was doing it then i thought the head was gone so i got a replacement head all machined etc and it is still doing the same thing.

No it didnt it was running bad before the head change because the head gasket was broken and it was putting water into the number 1 cylinder, the cooling system is all good now no leaks etc but why would i be having the same problem with two different heads and two different head gaskets.

is it using excessive fuel?

Did they check the head when they machined it?

Leaking valve stem seals? Crack Tested?

Was the block cleaned back properly?

The bores weren't damaged while the head was off?

Thats about it... For oil to get in it has to either come past the rings from below, across between the head and gasket, down from on top a valve, or out of a crack in the head...

ha ha no worries, i appreciate any help.

Yes the fuel usage is excessive but considering it is not using all cylinders correctly i assume that is why it is using a lot of fuel.

Oh i forgot i also changed the MAP sensor and it is still the same.

then i would check the fuel side of things to see if anything is damaged/disconnected/wrongly fitted or something

When you cleaned the old head gasket off the block the first time and cleaned up the block, how much crap went down the bores and between the pistons and bore?
Also, did the engine get really hit just before you did the head the first time?
Does it blow smoke on just deceleration? If so, valve stem seal related.
If it blows smoke under load(accelerating) it is most likely piston/ring/bore related(which is most likely since the same has happened with 2 heads).

If you disconnect the breather pipe from the intake, does it still blow smoke?
Does lots of "air" blow out from the breather pipe when it is disconnected(disconnect the pcv valve and block off the hose connected to the pcv). If so there is too much blowby, pistons, rings and a rebore, or another good block.

Another thing that can happen is the expander spring inside the oil rings can wear a groove in the oil rings and get stuck, which prevents the oil rings from contacting the bore properly. If there is little to no blowby, this could be the case.

Ok when i cleaned the head there were a few bits that went into the bores but i cleaned as much up as i could and blew it out with a compressor several times.

No it didnt get overly hot never overheated just had water going into the bore.

it blows lots of smoke when first started in the morning then it gets a little better as it warms up but it seems to blow more smoke if its on certain angles also if you hold the accelerator on about 2000rpm for a while the smoke gets a lot worse on constant rev.

the smoke is blue smells like oil and fuel very strong smell.

yes it still blows smoke when the breather is taken off, i will have to check the air blowing out the breather pipe tomorrow.

the spark plugs are fowling up with oil and getting black quickly but a dry black colour except for one which is not black but soaked with fuel.

i hope all that helps.

Is there spark at the over fuelled cylinder? Maybe you leaky injector there... When were they cleaned last?

check the map sensor hose, it may be cracked, or the plastic barb that it connects to at the back of the manifold could be broken.
What inlet manifold gasket did you use? pull the injector rail back and ensure its not covering the top of the ports, where the injector is spraying.

Could be i wouldnt think that having an injector problem would cause that much smoke, is that possible?

66 coupe i used the inlet manifold gasket that came with the VRS gasket kit, i assumed it was ok it went in well, might have to check that as well. As for the MAP sensor hose and fittings i have already checked that, all is well.
