hi all, i tried to start my car it started cranking, reds are on then all of a sudden nothing.
check list, battery, fuses fine then new battery terminals connectors still nothing. i have heard of smartlock but do not know really what is does and how it works and how to check if this is the problem. the only things that work are the hazards , not even brake lights nothing any insight would be greatly appreciated... Ive had the car for 4years now and nothing like this has ever happened before. checked the ECU relay. its evn got my dad beat and thats not easy dad is pretty smart when it comes to motor repairs both body and mechanical but dont ask him about cars with computers, he,s old school still he's so keen to learn. thanx dad. also the battery gets very hot. why would this be Last edited by miss tammy on Tue Feb 15, 2011 9:25 am, edited 1 time in total. |

try this --ED wont start, relays click fuel pump runs not winding over
in search topics,it seems to cover most problems.

thanx. nothing comes on not even noise from fuel pump, only hazards.
dad tried changing ECU under water bottle and sparks came out when he inserted new one. also the battery get very hot. |

did this happen all of a sudden or did this happen after a battery swap??
if the battery is getting hot that normally means there is a short a un fused power cable.. the thinner rubber coated wires on the battewry terminal are fusable wire links so if these short out they just stop working.. try checking that the terminals are the right way around. then check the red cable from the battery to the starter motor incase it has worn through the insulation shorting it to the body?? |

when it went dead at night dad didn,t touch till morning and thats when he noticed battery was hot. could it be in the ignition switch?

The EA's did have trouble with cooking batteries hence the ED has that snorkel on the battery...
If it was hot from just sitting there thats not right by any means... I'd be pulling the terminal off the positive, and checking from the postive lead to the body for a resistance check... See how many ohms it is... Sounds like Troy said there is a short to the body somewhere... Normally a fuse will blow for a short... The big cable to the starter is unfused... And I think think either the positive wire to the alternator, or the positive wire to the alternator light is unfused too... Also as Troy said check the fusible links off the positive terminal... These are often missed... So does it crank or not currently, not entirely sure with your first sentence... Cheers, Tim

doesn't crank at all
I went out to start as usual and thats all. it started cranking then everything went dead. only thing workin was hazards. that was late at night and dad checked for me in the morning thats when he notice battery was hot. it happened a couple of times because of old loose battery terminal connectors but i'd be able to just turn them on the battery to a tighter fit and it would start. Dad has since replaced. |

hold the key to crank and bump the dash above the handbrake... the contacts in the relay which is inside the smartlock module wear out and stick with age... Holding the key to crank and bumping the dash above the handbrake sometimes makes them go and then start the car...
The hot battery is still a worry... Nothing has been hooked up reverse polarity or nothing weird?

can anyone tell me why no reds at all? and battery gets hot.
changed battery changed starter fuse then unhooked at the battery big red lead that goes to starter put in new fusable link and it sparked and burnt out |

check that main power wire to the starter motor.
if it has cracked open or rubbed on anythin and is earthin onto the chassie it will do this. i also had this happen to my xf falcon a couple days after putin extractors on. i didnt look to see the main lead was resting on the extractors. needless to say it was a bit of a disaster. car stopped on the highway. every fuse blew and melted the positive terminal on the battery to a small puddle on lead.

Sounds like a bad earth problem. I have the NC FAIRLANE, which also has the same motor as the ED FALCON's.
regarding the dash lights not alight, have a look at the IGNITION FUSE to see if it's blown. regarding the battery overheating, that's just due to the position of the battery & the fact that these engines produce a fair amount of heat in the engine bay. therefore overheating the batteries. many people have placed the batteries in the boot for longer life. the battery shouldn't be overheating from a circuit short. the wires will get hot and sometimes melt the rubber coating, but i've never heard of a battery overheat due to a short circuit. keep us posted. would be interested to see what the problem is. good luck. |

You will find batteries do heat up when being charged or discharged... EA's has phenomenal trouble with batteries dying... Be it from engine bay temp, charge related heat or discharge heat... Hence the EBII onward had the battery in a box with a snorkel... Even an alkaline D cell will produce a fair bit of heat when short circuited... This is rather evident as the OP says the battery is getting hugely hot, but the motor doesn't start... Does the battery cool to ambient with the starter lead disconnected? Easiest way to test it is to disconnect both ends and measure with an ohm meter to the body... Resistance should be infinite... If you get a reading you need to pull it out because its rubbed through... Cheers, Tim
