I bet ya I mixed the shims up and have like an extra one somewhere that was meant to be in another rocker arm.

make sure the rockers are put back on the same spot they came off. if you didnt, you might have to re adjust the rocker thingy..(forgot the word). think its called the valve adjustment. hope this makes sence.

This happen to an engine i rebuilt 2 months ago. didnt mark where the rockers came out from and the car wouldnt start.

shouldnt the TDC on the cam gear (attached to timming chain) be on the right (passenger sidea), not left (driver side) as u mentioned

The engine was on TDC, cam was 180 out (non compression stroke), He didn't remove the cam/chain, so its all good.

as above, either too much lift or incorrect firing order!

ok something everybody has over looked here is the plugs i bet that when the have been out they have mabey been dropped or something and the gap has closed hence causing no or little spark on the cylinder its fitted to try that before replacing any lifter ect as that wont really cause a ruff idle rev range as i know (wating to get me cam)i dropped a shim out and lost it and still fitted the rocker gear to the car and it dosent runn rough it just ticks badley. the reason i say plugs as this happen to a guy at work same symptoms after doin a head and it was a plug gap had been bumped and wasnt fully sparking

That's impossible on a 4.0 mate, unless you remove all the rockers from the shafts, even then it wont make any difference to it.

Didnt loosen and remove timing chain tensioner.

Timing is out either the crank timing, dizzzy timing or cam timing.

timing can't be out cos I didn't remove the cam or loosen the chain or tensioner..

could be the plugs
could be the leads/firing order
could be incorrect shimming

That's all my options so far. I have no time to mess around with it this weekend, but I'll get straight back to it on Monday.

go for plugs first as the leads are individully lengthened so its har to muck up and shims shouldnt cause such a miss as u only used standard ford shims

If it's spark it's something happening evenly on all cylinders, or you'd notice one cylinder not effecting the idle when he pulled leads off individually.
So something that affects all cylinders?cap/rotor button?
TFI and coil usually kill it completely.

I'm not certain its shims either, hydro lifters can self adjust to a point, you'd have to over shim one a fair bit to stop the valve seating.
Under shimming will make it tick it's a*** off, but shouldn't affect the idle THAT badly, wouldnt think anyway, unless it was a drastic amount (possible I guess when dealing with a cam with that small a base circle).

I still reckon vac leak somewhere.
Maybe you knocked a hose while working in there?

Oh it can only be the plugs, it's definately plugs, because horis said so lol.

Jesus man, we've all given him things to look for, he can go over bit by bit and try and find the problem.
Could be plugs, could be cap or rotor as Jared said, could be over shimmed, could be a vacuum leak... Could be f**k anything.

When you pull the plugs out, give it a compression test, that will tell you it's it's over shimmed.

Did u remove distributor cap and if so remove again and check centre carbon contact is still there. Falls out sometimes.

Might also check engine bay in dark to see if anything sparks.

Are plugs tightened up?
