Ok so I did something stupid.. see if you can pick where I went wrong and then some advice on how to fix it would be good.
Note that the cam was NOT removed. Also, don't ask me why I did certain steps.. I just did.. it's over and done with so lets move on 1) Removed rocker cover 2) Removed rocker gear bolts 3) taped up lifters to rocker arms 4) removed rocker gear 5) removed lifters one by one, checked each shim for wear, swapped the couple of broken ones for new ones, and refit the lifters into the arms 6) taped the lifters back up to the rocker arms 7) refitted the rocker gear 8) removed spark plugs 9) wound motor over to TDC (mark on cam gear was on LHS) 10) refitted the spark plugs 11) put the rocker cover back on 12) refitted leads and everything else 13) started the car and it runs rough as guts Last edited by AdamN on Fri Apr 13, 2007 5:32 pm, edited 2 times in total. |

How do you mean it runs rough as guts? Any strange noises? What exactly is it doing? Vacuum hoses attached. Plugs and leads attached correctly. I checked this twice. No strange noises other than the ticking of lifters seeing as I removed all the oil from them. It runs rough throughout the rev range.. it's not driveable. It's smoothest at idle.. but it's just rough above that. Base ignition timing is ok too. Just checked that. |

Lifters haven't pumped up or firing order is wrong.
Definately not timing related as you never touched any part of it... Unless you did and haven't mentioned it lol. |

I know I'm stupid so I don't mind if other's know it too! Problem is I was trying to make sure everything was good with the car before I sell it.. and I've caused problems by checking hahaha |

ok
when it's running.. the tachometer jumps.. like just up and down.. together with the roughness of the engine and shaking of chassis |

Completely bled lifters won't idle that bad.
Is it blowing black smoke out the exhaust? Pull one lead off at a time, and note how they effect it, see if its one cylinder just missing?

You've either missed something, broken something, or have real bad luck and something wore out while you were working on the motionless car.
When you say a tiny bit, does it normally blow black smoke?? I reckon vac leak. edit: you didn't put any more shims in did you?

LOL an extra shim will cause it, the valves will be stuck open.
Go out there, check the firing order and look for anything out of place or disconnected, then come back.... Check the vacuum from the MAP sensor. |

I reckon vac leak. edit: you didn't put any more shims in did you? Black smoke: It's the tiniest amount.. barely visible.. yeah always blew that tiny amount. Vacuum leak.. there was only 1 vacuum hose that I disconnected. The one to the brake booster. and it's firmly back on there. Shims: I replaced a couple of them. Maybe they're not the exact same thickness.. would that make such a big difference? I mean it would be less than 0.5mm difference if any at all. |

Ok I think I'll start from scratch.
I've ordered all new shims of exactly the same thickness. I'm gonna replace ALL of them so each rocker arm has exactly the same shim thickness. I'm also gonna recheck all the clearances blah blah. |
