AdamN Common coolant leaks in I6's Water pump seal Thermostat housings Head gasket particularly under the exhaust manifold Radiator tank seals Radiator cap Any hose end. Heater tap. Water pipe seal at rear of water pump. water pipe seal at bottom of lower thermostat housing. Welsh Plugs. Now just work out exactly which one relates best to where you are seeing coolant.

there is a small hose on the water pipe underneath the inlet manafold it might have a sight slit in it the hose is about 10cm long it might be werth a look

if you have access to an air compressor and a regulator, you can pressure test with that. make sure to remove the fans and the accessory belt so you can see better.

It was the water pump. Stuff paying a mechanic $300 to fix it.. pump, pulley, ford coolant concentrate and distilled water was $100.. am going to spend $100-$200 on decent tools and change it myself this week.

did you watch that episode of mythbusters a while ago. They where putting all sorts of crap through a cars fuel system, and also through the radiator.
One of the myths was if you developed a leak in your cooling, could an egg seal the hole (pin hole) so you can get to a mechanic and get it fixed. Turns out it is plausible, and the egg DID stop the leak!! Probably an absolute waste of a post, and won't help you, but i found it amusing! |

Coffee beens was a good trick 20 years ago. I remmber that's how my old man fixed a leak in his old XF.

i would also check this. i had the same problem with mine where the hose had a split in it but it p****d it out

Like I said.. it was the pump.. Ended up costing $79 for a new pump with pulley. And got myself a sidchrome 40pce socket set metric & A/F for $180.. that's a s**t load better than taking it to a mechanic to do

At the wreckers where i used to work they told me if you had a leak you pour whole one of those little pepper shackers into the cooling system and the pepper would not dissolve and block the pin hole leak. You then drain all coolant and replace it all and it would be all fixed.
Good old bush mechanic brudda

As it was.. it only took me 2hrs.. and about 20mins of that was getting the old gasket off the block with a razor blade with no handle.. took forever. Also.. stupid sockets where too fat to get to the water pump bolts, they were being blocked by the pulley.. so I had to use ring/open spanners further increasing the time it took. I'd also like to add that the pulley on the water pump was so stuffed it barely turned hahaha And when the water pump is stuffed.. no bush mechanic fix will fix it.. you just gotta replace the thing. |
