Hi, it appears when my EF is running oil is flowing in a heavy stream from around the water pump area, what does this mean? If anything is wrong with the water pump, oil wouldn't be streaming from around it would it? This has started about 100km after putting a Tickford head on which is suss. The oil pressure gauge is in the red but i'm assuming I have put on the AU sender for the VCT, but not certain of this..

you timing chain tensioner is leaking, put some sealant on it and make sure its done up tight and is sealing on the timing cover

I checked it, but it is hard to tell with the bracket & pwr steer in the way...

it could also be from the front bolt where the vct idler pulley is, sometimes oil will get past the thread on the bolt and leak, mine leaked so i covered the bolt stem with silicon and hasnt leaked since..

spray the oil off with degreaser then hose, get someone to start it and you should be able to find where its coming from

could be what troyman mentioned (had that problem before) or it could be that you didn't put the right amount of silicone in the right place when you done the head. there needs to be two dabs of silicone where the timing cover gasket meets the head gasket. without this it generally will leak.

Hi thanks for your help guys. Yeah I noticed there seems to be alot of oil around the idler pulley and and the bolt etc is soked when removing so I'll try and seal that. The tensioner is broken internally, so I'll replace that tomorrow. See how these things go. I'm concered because there is so much oil, I put in 4 litres yesterday to get back home, drove about 35km and nearly all gone.

Turns out it's leaking from between the timing cover and head at the front. I put the seal in properly with the dabs of sealant at the ends. It might have twisted I guess. I don't have the will power to remove the head again. I spose there is no other way to stop this leak though? It's tempting to remove the rocker cover, get a piece of flexible rubber, smother it in gasket glue and stick it over the join... I can't see why this wouldn't work with the oil pressure hehind it?

I don't use a gasket there. Just a bead of sealer the whole way around.

You can fix it by pulling the timing cover off, should be easier than removing the cylinder head again. Gab |

Gab but to re-fitt the timing case you have to either drop the sump or remove the head anyway... |

Dropping the sump is easier than pulling the head off, cheaper too as you dont have to buy new headgasket etc, can be done by jacking the motor up a bit. Gab |

I can't see why this wouldn't work with the oil pressure hehind it? the rubber will fall off and go into the sump and block the oil pickup which will result in no oil pressure, and it will destroy the engine.
