Hey picked up an ED XR6 a few weeks back and it developed a nasty tick from the engine (running an EF XR6 engine), additionally it seemed to have problems revving and was down on power. I diagnosed the tick as being worn lifters, I bought a replacement set and whilst taking the old set out I saw what appeared to be one of the old lifters that was completely destroyed (it appears as if the tappet or foot of the lifter had broken off!) (no.2 inlet valve)
In doing so it has belted into the valve in this condition and done some sort of damage (see photos), it didn't appear to be severe and I gathered that it would be fine, replaced the set and put them back together. The tick has now gone but the car still wont rev out, it basically just cuts out at 4800rpm and feels sluggish everywhere, I'm wondering has the old damaged lifter belting into the valve done permanent damage, is it not opening/closing properly or staying open? I've done a comp test and its 200psi+ on 1-5 and a little down on #6 but nothing significant. Thoughts?

Looking at the photos, I would say the damage to the valve stem is slight. I think I would be looking elsewhere for the problem, for example, if it's an EF engine, has all the computer stuff been changed to accommodate the fact that the EB had a dizzy, and the EF didn't? Particularly if you didn't do the engine change. And so on.

As was said above, looks like tip damage but slight. Have you checked the timing? Also check to see the Cat is not collapsed.

Yeah it's got an EL XR6 computer in it, and the BBM is all working fine as well, it's always tough buying a car where you haven't made the changes yourself, makes diagnostics that bit more difficult. Ignition timing is fine, cam timing I don't know, and the car also has adjustable timing gear installed (I'm trying to figure why on earth its there when it appears to have a factory cam in it) and yes it could be a regrind but it has no attitional shims installed and behaves fine... Regardless I have no reason to believe the cam timing could be a problem, the car revved fine when I first got it, it's something that's only just occured in the last week or so. (and when i saw the damage to the valve I was thinking that it must have deteriorated and caused functional damage) Yeah I'm thinking a possible clog in the cat or fuel pump or filter, I'll check these out and see how I go. Anyway appears that the valves wouldn't be the cause of this, thanks for replies, I'll update this if and when I find the cause, cheers!

If it's an EF engine are you running distributor or coil pack ignition?
I ask because cutting out at a specific RPM range is one symptom of coil pack failure. -------------------------------------------------------- Edit -------------------------------------------------------- Quote: Yeah it's got an EL XR6 computer in it, Never mind, that answers that question
