Hey guys,
I have a 98 NL and lately i have replaced the coil and dizzy, all brought new and fitted at my uncle's workshop. After gettin the timing and everything set and working good again i noticed a "flux" in the revs on the dash. And sometimes on idle it would drop the revs and then regain it's spot again. I then noticed a day or so later that the flux was there through out the rev range. I told my uncle about it and he seemed to think it was just the dash. Anyway... Yesterday it had a Small flat spot in the rev range at about 3 8 or something, then missed like three times between then and the limiter. Today it's idle was pretty bad and under load you could feel the lumpy-ness in the revs... After it was parked for a hour or so i headed home. This time it was barely idling and rough all the way through the revs and lacked a sh$t load of power. So i took it to my uncle to see what he thought. We checked spark, filter, leads, plugs in the engine bay, coil leads... We thought maybe it was too advanced in the timing, so we backed it off a tad. Didn't change it one bit. So we moved it back, and it ran Perfect! Went for a test drive for pings etc, and BANG... motor stopped, backfired and yeah... Made it maybe 10mtrs. We changed the timing back a bit again, tried that and still nothing. It turns over but no fire, checked the spark and leads and all that again... Everything seemed fine. One thing it does now tho is sound like the exhaust is goin BACK out through the intake.. Like NOT backfiring but being pushed the wrong way. Every so offen the engine will just stop cranking too. Full lock up and the starter motor wont turn it over. So we are thinking it's the "Timing chain" has been streached and has now jumped a tooth, or something. Wat Happens with the timing chains in the I6's? I have heard of them Breaking, but jumping a tooth??? common? Ways of checking myself? Other things that might be causing this? Thanks for any help! Parker

Ah ok, just that gas systems will do that sometimes but yours must be a different problem

Thats strange. Ive got one on LPG and have had a few backfires but nothing like you are describing. Was the gas installed when new? Sometimes removing the system when intergrated with fuel system can cause all sorts of problems. i would leave the lpg system in. I would think it unlikely that the chain skipped a tooth but still possible. How many kms on engine.? Missing could be headgasket and when running on lpg cracked headgaskets show up more. Good luck mate Cheers

After having a day to look at the engine search on here and all other ford websites... The chain seems to be tight, well at least tight enough not to be able to slip a tooth, and also a mate said(This mate works a Crow cams) if it's put in a tooth out "Kiss your motor goodbye" that it's enough to make everything hit and screw the motor. Anyway, the engine still turns the dizzy(Good sign) The engine still turns the cam(Good sign) BUT When the motor is on TDC the Cam Marks don't quite line up... Like the hamanic balancer is slipped. I dunno... This sht is over my head half the time! lol would i be a BAD ford lover is i burnt the whole car???

Did you put the car in diagnostic mode before setting the timing. Short out the top and bottom pins to the far left on the diagnostic plug under the fuse panel. Start the car, the engine should rev up to about 1300-1500rpm then settle back down. NOW YOU HAVE TO WAIT A FURTHER 2MINS UNTIL THE MOTOR NEARLY STALLS> NOW YOU HAVE ABOUT 1-2MIN TO SET THE BASE IGNITION TIMING.

When we first brought the new dizzy and coil thats how we did it. At the moment the car wont even run so i can't reset it. ECU has been reset to, to see if that would get it running
