As the title says, my starter relay is screwed, i cant even get the car to turn over... but connecting a wire from the battery to the stater fires it up.... how much effort is this to replace, and does anyone have any idea where the relay is?

relays are on the feder support right behind the battery they may have a small black plastic cover that is retained by one screw. there is a bank of 4 relays the stater should be the one on the end furthest away from the battery hope this helps

looking at the battery.......there are 6 relays under the header tank and 4 relays alongside the battery. in the 4 bank the one closest to the reservoir is the starter relay. the one furthest from the reservoir in the 4 bank is the horn relay, unplug and swap the two. if your horn still works and the car still doesnt start it's not the relay

Ok, it is not the starter relay... Earthing the starter solenoid while the ignition is in the "ON" position will start the f**k thing... any ideas before i take ot to an auto electrician

hmmm, i have now had a wierd idea that may just work.... using the earth of the starter solenoid, connect that to the battery with a starter button wired in... good or bad idea

How much would it be to get the whole relay unit replaced? (The whole thing near the battery)

have you tried starting it in neutral it could be the safety on your tranny that is stuffed i experienced a similar problem a couple years back

All other relays situated there (Horn, High and Low Beam) work fine, i switched the horn and starter relays, and the horn still works, but the starter doesnt, yet earthing the starter and the car starts fine, so i was considering a starter button that earths the starter motor as a way of fixing the f**k thing

why do you want to do that?
Is the relay clicking when you turn the key? You shouldn't need to replace the base, are you missing positive or negative on the relay base? You'll need someone to turn the key with the relay out to test this. Probe one terminal at a time, with reference to negative, then positive. Then reverse and do the other terminal. On each terminal you should have either positive or negative. Work out what you have. The terminals in question are the ones on the extreme left and right in the crude pic below Find out whats missing - if its negative, you may have an inhibitor switch problem (not on manual) If positive is missing - check if your ignition is sending positive to the BEM when cranking, and check if the BEM is outputing this to the relay base on acceptance of the right barrel code. (I don't think the ECU has any say in cranking - someone correct me if i'm wrong cause i don't have my books in front of me)

when you say earthing the starter motor - do you mean shorting its body to the car with a spanner or something? Or do you mean earthing one of the terminals on the relay base?
One of the terminals should already be earthed (either the left or right in the above pic) and the other gets power when you crank. This connects the top and bottom pins to excite the starter. So what are you connecting to where to get the car to start?

Sounds like you've already established the 12v side of things is okay. You can't 'earth' the solenoid on it's own - it's already earthed through the starter motor frame. I'd check as EBgizmo has suggested, the engine earth lead might have crappy connections - check for continuity from the starter motor frame to the car body.
