OK guys,
I was having timing chain tensioner rattle at 1000-1500rpm when cold a while back and changed the tensioner to try and fix this. I created a few other dramas then (slipped tooth on chain) but after lining it all back up everything seemed OK (~170psi on all 6). Thats when the noise started. I have since replaced all guides and the chain in an effort to kill this noise which I thought was chain related. I even put my old (much lower seat presure) valve springs in (no noise with these puppies) to see if it helped but im still getting it at the same point which is making me think its not the chain at all. It happens at 3000rpm~. Heres a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLXZoFXPXAE Anyone have any ideas? im f**k sumped and cant really drive it like this...

I was thinking the same thing as gogetta and the oil pressure regulator for the timing chain tensioner. See pic for location (circled in blue)

Hopefully you don't have to go to the extent I did in that pic!
Try cleaning out the tensioner bore with fine wet and dry on a dowel. Also I've heard of people installing small washers to give the spring more tension, I haven't needed to, but its a worthwhile try.

thanks for the replies guys.
yes, regulator valve is in place (so is the o-ring). the last time i had it apart (last weekend) i poked a pin in the holes to make sure it worked, and some oil came out so i guess it is. i have cleaned out the tensioner bore and sanded it out, and the piston moves freely. from the noise in the video, do you think its chain related at all??? i have had the front cover off 3 times in 2 months, ford are making a fortune from gasket sales to me...

you can hear the noise 3 times when i rev it from 0:10 onwards... doesnt sound much like a normal 1500-1800rpm type chain rattle but sounds f**k.
the head had a small amount off, nothing abnormal. block is stock.

basically at high rpm, its sounds like a lawnmower engine. Cant really say what it is, as most of the things you have already replaced or bought new?!! |

everything on the chain except the sprockets are new.
could it be starving for oil? no idea why it might be, no other signs of this. could it be a lifter collapsing? when i run it with the cover off, the #5 exhaust lifter sprays a LOT more oil than the rest.

so far suggestions are:
- try new set of rocker arms - try with no drive belt any other ideas to narrow it down?

i am in vic.
tonight i changed the oil pressure sender, so now my dash gauge is working. it doesnt show any sign of dropping when the noise starts, just sits where it always did (before i broke the sender a while ago). also i changed the oil filter (clutching at straws here). also removed the cam sync sensor to check s**t out. looked fine to me (no wear marks, no metal shavings, spun freely). so far i have: - changed all guides, chain - f**k with tensioner 100x - tried w/ no belt - removed/refitted intake checking for rattles - whole new rocker assembly (lifters and all) - checked sync sensor - removed/refitted balancer it either has to be something in the bottom end (why would it only do it after 3 grand???), something in the torque convertor (i never touched it), or the aux shaft (how could it be f**k? i thought they just seized?). any more ideas? im dying here!

have u tried removing the tensioner and pushing on the guide with a large screwdriver whilst the engine is running...u would need an assistant to start the engine while you kept pressure on the chain

I wonder if i had a problem in this area whether i would just get another engine. If something goes wrong in this area you tend to need to anyway.

thats where im heading, but i dont have the tools (or patience) needed to do an engine swap.
gogetta, no i havent, but as i have said above, i dont think its the tensioner (i have tried two different units, shims on the spring, shims on the non-chain end). i will try this when i get time + assistant...
