Jut got my EA MPFI 5 Speed back after close to ten months in the body shop and it was running well for the first day or two but now it is running like a dog.
It hesitates when you apply part throttle especially lower in the rev range. When cruising I have to use a lower gear as it surges and stutters. It is almost like it is flooding but I am unable to check for smoke. The only thing I know I did was an oil change and I spilt some oil so I degreased the front top of the engine. As a result I have checked IAC (good, near new anyhow), the connector is clean and dry. I also checked the TPS and even though it looked good I fitted my new spare. I took the distributor cap and rotor off and all good at least visually including bone dry. All plug leads also removed and refitted. Idle is stable and steady but when it gets hot the idle may also stutter intermittently. But this is very minor. I am out of ideas.... I am thinking if it was the MAP sensor it would be running bad all the time and smoking even sitting there? Also no difference between cold and hot running so far as I can tell.

I had that problem so i changed the fpr, injectors, fuel pump and fuel filter and it's all fine now. I did the fuel filter as it was needed, the fuel pump as it has done 159k km , the injectors as they did the same k's as the pump and the fpr as it was stuffed. First thing i would check is the filter and fpr.

Pump is a brand new Bosch unit done less than 200km. Injectors are near new VDO done less than 3000km. Just fitted new Ryco Z200 fuel filter but old one was clean and had done less than 3000km.
I have also swapped known good MAP sensor and no fix. Have a spare regulator so will give it a go. Thanks.

No worries if that doesn't fix it then it might be running very rich.

Should mention if I use more throttle it clears up and runs fine. I have had a read of the manual and it seems if I put it down to any sort of engine mode the problem exists in part throttle mode. Outside of that mode such as wide open throttle, idle, etc it runs fine.

Adjustment screw might be out or the o2 sensor

Darcy4524 wrote: Adjustment screw might be out or the o2 sensor Good call. So, I did Ignition on Engine Off test - pass Ignition On Engine On Test Fail. Code 42, O2 Sensor reading high voltage (rich). Checked factory manual. MAP sensor was previously swapped for a known reference unit, so not that. Swapped for a known good fuel pressure regulator, no fix. Fuel filter changed, no fix. Essentially it left O2 sensor or ECU as key targets. the O2 sensor is pretty new in km terms so I pulled connector apart and found water in the back of the shell. Blew it out with the air gun, contact cleaner, put together. Presto. back to her old self. Literally a two minute fix.

Last update, car ran fine for a day then reverted back to running horrible. Tried resetting connector a few time no permanent fix, off to repco and $80 new O2 sensor all good running like a new one.
