Hey guys, is it better to run a high flow cat than to run a Cat thats gutted out and replaced with a straight threw piece of tubing?
Im looking to buy a Metal cat and ditch my straight threw one, I know there illegal! but it did go better! thanks Joe |

I'd go the metal cat, i had a straight through cat on another car for a while, and while they are cheap and effective, i noticed an improvement in sound and performance with the fitment of a metalcat.

Nothing is going to flow better than a straight through pipe. The cat can be as high flow as it wants, but it's still going to not flow as well. In saying that will you notice the difference - probably not. So if it's for a road car, I guess it's a personal decision on whether it's worth the risk of the fine and defect for such a small gain.

$10,000 fine for a straight through cat...for a handfull of horse power..... or could buy a turbo kit with installation... for that money and have a whole herd of extra horsepower..

I'm sure you you get a fine...but that would depend on each state. If the cat guts itself, then I say your car wouldn't run very well when all the crap from the cat blocks the muffler. Not to mention...you need to bash it pretty hard to gut it out. I don't think exhaust gases at that pressure/temperature/speed is sufficient enough to gut the cat on its own. Anyways...run a catalytic converter...don't be cheap. phong =P~

My cat internals were a bit fkd up and loose after I hit some large gravel built up in the middle of the road, and a bit of it just fell out when I pulled the cat out and tipped it upside down.
Mind you, only a bit of the front was broken off, more than 3/4s of it was fine. I'd like to see a cat gut itself. |

can someone tell me how u get defected for this
at first glance their is no way in hell someone is going to be able to tell if a cat is gutted or not. well dont know about the other states but the chances of being defected for this illegal mod in SA would be slim...especially when their is quite a few jap crape cars driving around with a huge defect sticker on their car!!! yes it is defectable but the chances of being caught for it unless you were doing something completly stupid to get pulled over in the first place are slim what type of sound difference does it make? i got told it makes a more hollow sound...u reckon the sound is better or worse? i was going to do this to my EF but people convinced me otherwise. what are all u guys thoughts on the sound? |

I've smelt a few cars with gutted cats now, and they smell the same, maybe a bit rich if anything.

depends on the car, some have a F**k bad smell, some end up making a nice puddle of petrol on the ground just after the exhaust tip.
it does have a more hollow / tinny sound as well

it does have a more hollow / tinny sound as well It sounds hollow when you are accelerating. If you are coasting/decelerating you can't tell the difference. The exhaust will smell of sulur. I also noticed that there was not enough backpressure to the engine, which caused me to have a massive flat spot. there is a screen at the rear of the cat. It is similar to mesh used for flyscreens. It takes a bit of effort to break this (a standard cat will not be able to gut itself).

the hollow sounds is deleted by addding the straight threw pipe, also im wondering about the back pressure as well?
