gday im going to order my Pacemaker competition extractors tommorow and i was just looking at the Jim mock site and he doesn't use a high flow cat. He jus modifies the standard one to 2.5inch. Does anyone no what Jim mock does to the cats?, and are the highflow cats really worth it?
cheers

Nothing except look shiny! The only real benefit with a high flow cat is the pipe size on the inside is usually 2.5" or 3" as opposed to the 2.25" that your standard one is. Otherwise they really don't effect flow enough to warrant their cost. I'm getting one soon for $120 but only because my standard one is rooted and I've got a 2.5" exhaust

would the cat be a big restriction for mine because the exhaust is 2.5inch allway through?

don't they add the back firing noise while de-accelerating?

the cat is only about 30cm long so, unless you're pushing 200rwkw it's not going to make a noticeable difference. If your current cat is in good working order, not rattling etc, then don't bother with a high flow one. However, if you reckon it's on it's way out then you may as well get a high flow 2.5" one.
Make sure they flange the exhaust and headers if you dont get a high flow one so you've still got the option of easily swapping it yourself later on.

Nope, a louder exhaust due to less or no mufflers will do that. Bare in mind that a cat also acts as a sort of resonator so that when you use no cat or a hollowed out cat (which are both illegal) you will get more noise. For those who don't know, a catalytic converter act as a catalyst and reacts with the the Nitrogen oxides, Carbon Monoxide and carcinogenic Hydocarbons which are released straight from your motor and converts them to much less harmfull gases.

When it starts rattling like your exhaust is touching on something... Plus you lose a noticeable amount of power

mmm not good, iv started to hear a little rattle in my exhaust as i put it in reverse and the revs drop. like a humming vibrating noise but goes away as soon as the revs go up a little. But the car hasn't lost any power

Yeh... the rattle is only there when it idles at that awkard number of revs. It may be on the way out. Perhaps replace it... better to be safe than sorry

My factory cat was shagged when i had my extractors fit, for a budget solution i have a commodore cat fit, which i think is 2.5", has flanges on both sides to make it easy to replace, and good one's can be had cheaply second hand, thanks to all the commodore p plate drivers who write off their car's.
Cheers ToranaGuy

yeah its an oldie, by the way i didn't get a highflow cat straight away. I had the catback and the pacemaker comps for a while, i got a Magnaflow 2.5 stainless highflow cat about 3 months after that. It made the exhaust so bloody loud but it revved smoother. I have dynos showing highflow cats gain about 2-3rwkw

There are different types of high flow cats too. Ceramic the cheaper option which dont last as long as the metal cats. also high flow cats have different CPSI (cubes per square inch) the average ones are about 300 to 400 Cpsi which dont allow much flow but are for keeping emisions to a minimum. But u can get 200 and 100 Cpsi which flow much better but may get u in hot water if the EPA pull u ova. So when asking for a cat ask for the Cpsi rating the lower the better.

1 point to note....
If your cat is on the way out. It can spit it's guts into your new exhaust......
