Hi all.. need some help I have been trying to fix this high soot out of the exhaust for a while. My cousin owned the car previously and had similar issues. Economy is 17.8 l/100km with my wife driving and tha A/C turned off..... Let me start by listing what has been done.
New ECU fitted an EL fairmont heaps more pick up and better auto gear changes Redback extractors new high flow cat and a 2.5 inch exhanust new leads and plugs. the old ones arcing to the block. XG intake. New filters fuel and air, New fuel pump. Three cans of injector cleaner and 98 octane fuel new O2 sensor. then replaced Water temp sensor. Engine operates in the lower end of normal temperature Thermostat is new. Checked timing. Calibrated the ECU on instalation. Engine idle fine and shifts but has been known to hunt a little bit on occasion. I have heard of cars runnign in perminent warm up mode does anyone know of this issue and how to resolve. The car does not have a crisp note untill you get up in the rev range and is a big doughy off the line. Someone must have been down this road before. |

Have you checked the vacuum hose for the MAP sensor ????.......they split right down near where it goes onto the fitting at the intake manifold......a vacuum leak here will cause the black soot.
Also check the tension of the intake manifold bolts too.....the gaskets dry out and shrink.

When I ran an EL ECU with the log manifold, it didn't result in black soot etc.
Yes, it didn't feel quite right, but it did run clean. I do think it is worth thoroughly checking the map sensor vacuum hose first, as I did have very similar symptoms when my hose split. I had to jack up the front of the car and check it out from underneath. If that isn't it then try swapping back to an EB ecu and see if that makes any difference. Cheers BenJ

Other thing that'll cause excess fuel usage is a bung fuel pressure regulator... Stick a master gauge in your fuel line and report back with what's it reading... Should be around the 200kpa mark at idle...
That EL ECU will learn a little bit... It'll notice that at it's default rate the injector pulses make the engine run lean and it'll keep the injectors open long (more like a std computer) and that, but even the EL computer in mine ran the car OK without too many noticeable side effects, not like blowing black clouds anyway... Cheers, Tim

Thanks for all the good suggestions guys I will follow them all and report back. I don't think any ECU change with or with out BBM is the issue but after I have exausted all the other I will swap it back.
I had never heard of pressure reg supplying higher pressure but will test this and the earths is a suspect so I will definitely check this wiring also. Any yeah a common split to the MAP sensor makes sence so I look for the fault you have suggested... As I said this EB has carried this fault like an albatross around its neck for a few years now so it must be getting close to the source. |
