G'day lads,

What's the secret??? My high pressure power steering hose was leeking badly, so I got a new one and had a mechanic fit it. That was 2 month's ago and now it's leeking again!!!

I know the AU power steering is known for it's leeking, but there must be some secret to fitting the hose or at least stopping the leek.

It's actually dripping power steering fluid from the nut that attaches the hose to the pump. I have had it apart, it's not threaded, the O ring is fine, it's not done up too tightly or loosely, but for some reason it just keeps leeking.

Any idea's, any help would be appreciated. I am sick of topping up power steering fluid every day and leaving a mess behind where ever I park.

Okay here's the secret, (don't tell anybody) your mechanic forgot to put in the o ring seals on the high pressure line or used the original ones, always replace them when you undo the hose.

But if it were that simple I wouldn't have posted. I've done the O rings, still leeks. It's hardly rocket science, but it's got me stumped as to why it still leeks. May just have to replace the whole lot. Worth a shot anyway.

. their is a seal inside the nut because it spins on the pipe,and the o ring on the end aswell.When u buy the line from ford the nut comes seperate so u screw the nut in first,put some rubber grease on the pipe and then put the pipe in. some people put the nut on the pipe first and then screw it in which damages the o ring inside the nut causing leak. Once the pipe is pushed into nut it aint ever coming out,need a nut splitter. Hope I made sense :) :)

Check whether it leaks around the High pressure steering reservoir nut, not sure about the AU's but I had this problem also, but I have an ED which has a different steering pump.

That make's alot of sense. Although I didn't get the hose from ford and it came already assembled with the nut on the pipe. This would probably explain why the pipe has some movement in it. I will check this out further.

Ford quoted me something like $400 for the hose (comes with the complete assembly, not just a high pressure hose). I got an after market one for the AU that a Ford wrecker specialist manufactured, so as to avoid the cost of a Ford dealer.

having being a power steer mecanic for a couple of years i can tell you the genuine ford au hoses aren't worth the plastic they come in. go to the wreckers and get a stuffed ea hose then go and see a hose repairer, (enzed/pirtek) or better still find a small local bloke who will do a better job as he needs word of mouth to keep in business and have him make up a new hose with the ea pump fitting. then the teflon seal in the hose will never leak again as it is no longer there. hope this helps. is a bit of extra work but well worth it in the long run.
