Personally I dont like HM gem motors. Get an engine builder to reco it.

Dare I ask why your getting an entire reco motor because your head gasket blew? Why not just spend the $150.00 on a head gasket kit and fix it. Or a bit extra on a Valve Regridn Set (VRS) and get the valve seals done at the same time so you know she's all good.

yeah its for an ef fairmont, its done over 300000 kays and id rather have a nice new motor in it so i know i can mod it without it dying. I just thought the hm ones would be good and they come with a warranty.

Ive heard a few bad thing about HM reco's Ie, non matching cyl's re-used parts, just slap together motors.

but then again, I had a L20 nissan motor that was just a HM 5star reco and this bloody motor was the best I've ever owned.. ended up with twin dcoe 45mm carbs, extractors and not even a cam change and the thing is still going! pulled very well, and the touque from a 4banger was unbelieveable!

and personally, I'd have no probs with reco from there... as long as its a nissan or a toyota motor.

I'd spend more $$$ to get the 4.0 refreshed along with a au head gasket!

hmmmmm... the bottom end is reasonably simple and very durable. remove the head and you should be able to get some sort of idea on what it's like.
your better off taking the $1500 that you have, removing the head, buying AU metal headgasket (genuine from fraud spare parts for around $80.00ish), a VRS kit for the other gaskets. Taking the head in to have the bottom checked/flattened/shaved/whatever needs to be done, getting the new valve stem seals from the VRS kit fitted at the same time and some port and polish work. buying a regrind camshaft from Wade and the shims and fitting that too. At the end you'll have a full reco head that is going to perform a lot better than stock. your bottom end is most likely to be fine, unless there's something indicating otherwise.

If i were you id keep clear of HM. I know of 2 people personally the had absolute lemons and believe me warranty doesnt mean jack to those wankers. They will always find a way out of it.

My mate went through 2 vn v6's in 4 months 1 replaced on warranty then he ended up just giving up cause they would only offer him another replacement.

He sole the car a bought an EB fairmont :)

I used to work for a distrubutor of hm engines. We also used to reco our own. The standing joke was "hm engines are Hit and Miss: you might get a good one, you probably won't". We would probably have one a week returned for us to repair.
I wouldn't put a hm engine in my mother in laws commodore.

1: any rebuilt engines warranty isnt worth s**t if you're gonna be modding it
2: why not spend a few more $$ on a decent rebuild with performance in mind?
